After a long wait, the Xbox team at Microsoft has finally released of Xbox Video and a separate Xbox Music app for Windows Phone 8. It’s been long since the Zune brand was shunned and its services morphed into Xbox Music and Video, but Windows Phone 8 released only with Music functionality, and there was no video rentals or downloads. We now have two separate apps, one for Xbox Music which works only with a Music pass, much like a Spotify client and Xbox Video, which finally allows you to download or stream videos from the service full of TV shows and Movies. Currently it doesn’t offer HD playback either, so that’s a bummer, considering the fact that the Lumia 1520 just released and is perfect for watching movies. In the build up to separately updated apps for the platform moving forward to 8.1, these apps come as a much needed release for Windows Phone currently.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Unboxing
The Nokia Lumia 1520 just launched a couple of days back in India for a price of Rs. 46,999/- after launching internationally in Abu Dhabi back in October. Being the company’s first phablet sized device with a 6 inch 1080p screen, it also naturally is the first Windows Phone with a full HD resolution and quad core innards. With these specs and more, the platform finally comes to parity with Android in the mobile space, at least in the hardware department. Software too has seen small changes with an additional column, upping the information density to a higher level than before. We have got the Indian retail unit with us now, so we went ahead and unboxed it for you –

The Xbox One is all set to release on November 22nd in 13 countries, and as a precursor, Microsoft has unveiled the new Xbox One Smartglass app for Windows Phone and Windows 8 devices. The Smartglass v2 is a massive improvement over the previous version that worked with the Xbox 360. It now talks directly to the console via WiFi Direct, whereas previously, it needed internet and your live ID to talk to the console and there was always a bit of lag sending over commands or executing actions. Now that the latency is massively reduced, the handshake and resuming of connections between the game and the Smartglass app should be very quick and seamless. In case you didn’t know, Smartglass is the definitive second screen screen experience for the Xbox, with keyboard input, touch control and second screen apps for games and videos taking center stage.

Viber is a well known app, popular mainly for its VOIP services and chat. The company has been having its own Windows Phone 8 app for a while but it lacked some much needed features. With the announcement of the new desktop app, the integration was curiously missing out on the Windows Phone platform with the 3.0 update, but finally, the app has been now updated with a nicely refreshed UI with custom backgrounds support and better integration with Viber desktop that lets you take calls and transfer them over to phone from the PC or vice versa. You can download the update from the Windows Phone Store here.

But now, they have not only released updates to these apps, but also added a bit of an exclusive offer to them. With the RedBus.in app on Windows 8, you get Rs. 75/- off on a ticket, if it costs more than Rs. 500/-, till December 31st, 2013. We all have, at one point in time, used a Symbian phone. Some of us have even used Symbian^3 phones, which had some unique Nokia software on them. One of those was the Sleeping screen beta that added glance-able notifications and nifty personalization options on a standby screen that is usually devoid of anything useful. Nokia had launched a similar thing for Windows Phone earlier with the Amber update, called the Glance screen, but it lacked and still lacks some of the functionality that came with Sleeping screen. In an effort to bring this unique feature on par with what Symbian had, the company has released a new Glance Background app through its beta channel. The app lets you choose your own wallpaper for the idle glance screen of your Windows Phone. Note that the 520 and the 625 are the only two devices that do not support this feature, the rest of the Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices do, and it works really well.
