Interview – Nokia’s head of Imaging on the Nokia Lumia 720

We are now in the elongated Mobile World Congress post-hangover phase, because, to be honest, it all seemed like a blur at the event. You can get what we are saying if you take a look at our big MWC 2013 wrap up. But even in that blurry mess, some devices stood out, and one of them was the Nokia Lumia 720. Nokia proudly claimed they are bringing high end innovation to their new mid-range Lumia smartphones, with the Lumia 720 and the Lumia 520. In some ways, they definitely did, especially with the Lumia 720. You can read our in-depth hands on impressions here. Truth be told, we were really impressed with the display and the camera. The camera is a special one. Its 6.7 megapixel sensor coupled with a super fast f1.9 lens is aimed at providing great photos in most lighting conditions. But little did we know there is a lot more to the camera than just megapixels and the aperture. Hence, we contacted Juha Alakarhu, Nokia’s head of Camera Technology, with some questions regarding the Nokia Lumia 720 and asked him all about its imaging capabilities. Nokia Lumia 620 gets a new rugged shell with IP54 dust and water protection

The Nokia Lumia 620 just launched in India, and for all you prospective buyers or owners, a good news is that Nokia just announced a rugged shell CC-3061 for the device with IP 54 dust and water protection. This shell is not a cover, not a pouch, but a replaceable shell that can just swap with your present one. The shell can withstand dust and splashes of water defined by the Ingress Protection rating of IP 54. It is slated to be available within a month.

Nokia partners with New India Assurance to provide handset insurance

Nokia India has partnered with New India Assurance (NIA), a leading global insurance group, wholly owned by the Govt. of India to launch handset insurance plan. This would let you safeguard your device against thefts, burglary, malicious acts, riots among others, as well as damage. It starts at minimum insurance premium of just Rs. 50, and the plan will cost 1.25% of the purchased handset’s value. Consumers purchasing their handsets from a Nokia Branded Retail Store can provide their personal details and receive their insurance certificate, handout and payment receipt to avail this plan. Nokia Asha 310 now available in India for Rs. 5601

Nokia Asha 310 that was announced last month is now available in India from the official Nokia Shop. It is the company’s first affordable touch screen phone with Dual SIM support and WiFi connectivity. It has a 3.0-inch (240 x 320 pixels), scratch-resistant capacitive touch screen display, 1 GHz processor and a  2 MP rear camera. It  runs on S40 Asha OS with Swipe UI and comes with 40 Free EA games including Tetris, Bejeweled, Need for Speed The Run and Fifa 2012. Nokia Lumia 620 goes on sale in India at a price of Rs. 14,999/-

Yes, the cat is finally out of the bag. Nokia Lumia 620, the company’s mid range Windows Phone 8 device that has been much awaited in the Indian market, has finally gone on sale in the Nokia India online shop. The currently available colours on sale are Cyan, Green, White and Magenta while the Yellow and Black variants are still shown as “Coming soon”, but we think it’s a work in progress at the site, and it might be available soon too. All the colour variations are priced at Rs. 14,999/- with delivery marked as “within 7 days” meaning it is already hitting retail anytime now.

Jolla Sailfish OS Hands-On

At MWC 2013 , we were lucky to sit down with Marc Dillon, CEO of Jolla which is a mobile start-up based  in Finland. While Jolla might be new to mobile scene, most of the team previously worked with Nokia for several years before stepping out to start Jolla.If you were a fan of the Nokia N9 or any of the  Maemo or MeeGo devices , you will surely appreciate the approach Jolla’s Sailfish OS brings to the mobile arena.

Nokia Lumia 620 gets a pre order price of Rs. 15,199 on Flipkart

The Nokia Lumia 620 has been a long time coming. It was initially slated to be launched on the first week of February but it is already the first week of March, so it is about time it arrived on the market, and signs indicate that it is coming real soon indeed. Flipkart has just put up the phone for pre order at a price of Rs. 15,199, with availability promised within a week.

Photosynth arrives for Windows Phone 8 with a lens app

Photosynth, the 360 degree(horizontal and vertical) photo stitching panorama app that has been there on Windows Phone for quite a while, has finally received an update for Windows Phone 8, with a nice lens app as an addition. Microsoft has been pushing the Photosynth service for a long time with its nice photo stitching capabilities, that are very similar to what you can find in the Android 4.2 camera’s photo sphere application. The Windows Phone 7 version has been there for the Mango devices and above since May 2012 and it is about time that it has been updated for Windows Phone 8, that too with a lens app for the camera.

Nokia Lumia 520 and 720 price revealed for UK, coming in April

Both the Nokia Lumia 520 and the Lumia 720 are available for pre-order in UK from online retailer Clove. Both these devices were announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this week. The Lumia 520 has a 4-inch (800 x 480 pixels) IPS display and the Lumia 720 comes with a 4.3-inch  (800 x 480 pixels) ClearBlack LCD display. Nokia 301 hands on impressions

The Nokia 301 is one of the two low end feature phones that Nokia announced at the Mobile World Congress 2013. The 301 is not just a feature phone but a feature rich phone, made for the ever hungry budget user, wanting for more features with as little expenditure possible. According to us, the Nokia 301 fits that bill very well. Nokia Lumia 520 Hands On

We brought you the Nokia Lumia 520 photo gallery and having spent a bit more time with the handset, here’s our first hands on impressions of the phone. The Lumia 520 packs in 1Ghz Dual Core Qualcomm processor combined with 512MB RAM which delivers decent performance.

Nokia Lumia 720 hands on impressions – Sleek, sexy and youthful

The Nokia Lumia 720 was part of the new effort from Nokia to launch an attack on the fledgling mid range smartphone market. With the Lumia 620 already attacking a lower mid level pricing, there was still a massive gap between the 620 and the 820, and that is now filled by the Lumia 720. The Lumia 720 in short is very sleek, sexy and youthful. That description might apply to most of the Lumia devices but it is perfectly apt for the Lumia 720 and you’ll know why soon, when you read our hands on impressions after the break.
