Smartphone sales in India soar 186% in Q1 2014: IDC

Owing to migration of a large user base from feature phones to smartphones, India has recorded 186% growth in smartphone shipment in Q1 of 2014, according to IDC. The smartphone penetration in India still hovers at 10% and it is expected to grow due to a variety of factors including greater availability of low-cost devices and additional sales emphasis by top-flight vendors on less populous parts of the country.

Micromax and Karbonn take top positions as the Indian Smartphone market surges ahead with the Phablet revolution

You might have seen us reporting on various marketshare reports each month coming from a company called IDC. Usually, the company provides a wider perspective of the global market for mobile phones as well as smartphones, but this time, they have focused on the second fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, India. We saw in June that the overall shipments of Smartphones in India was at just 6.1 million devices, but in a quarter, it has risen to 9.3 million shipments, according to IDC. And over half of the shipments were from local players like Micromax, Karbonn and the others, with the former taking the no. 2 and 3 positions of the Top 5 Smartphone vendors in the Indian market respectively.

BlackBerry ships 6.8 million smartphones in Q1, Stock down 28%

Blackberry pushed out its quarterly earnings report yesterday and the news is disappointing for the most part. Covering financial quarter 1 for 2014 ie from March to May 2013, the smartphone manufacturer has increased its revenues from $2.8 billion to $3.1 billion. The company has lost a total of $84 million which amounts to about 13 cents per share. Total device shipments were 6.8 million of which just  about 40% were BB10 based devices. Chennai Airport prepares for paperless tickets using smartphones, tablets and laptops

Just after the BCAS(Bureau of Civil aviation Security) announced that, like the Indian Railways, Airports in India can accept tickets on phone or any computing device, the Chennai Airport has started preparations for the same. If implemented, passengers will be permitted into terminal buildings with tickets in digital form, but the boarding pass will still have to be paper once checked in.

More than half the smartphones sold in Asia are running Android

The advancement of Android in Asia is strikingly impressive. So when Samsung and Google decided to shift the Galaxy Nexus event to Hong Kong, it probably had to do something with the latest report from ABI analysis that reveals a tremendous 52% of the smartphones in Asia are running Android; as opposed to the 43% of the smartphone merchandize in the US.

Japan’s largest telecom operator NTT Docomo just revealed its plans for the summer by announcing 24 new devices. These phones cover almost any kind of usage a person might have or want and gives them unparalleled choice. Android Gingerbread is the operating system of choice on 8 of the devices. The camera phone segment has been pushed up a notch by the 6 devices on offer with cameras ranging from 12 to a whopping 16 megapixels.
