The parent companies of EE could exit Britain’s biggest mobile network in the near future if new reports are to be believed. The Galaxy Note Edge will NOT go on sale in the UK on November 28 as originally planned with Samsung confirming the handset’s launch has been delayed until December 12. Alongside the delay in the launch, Samsung have pushed back the pre-order period and shortened it to a week meaning you won’t be able to order it from Samsung or Carphone Warehouse before December 5th. One of the biggest changes in Apple’s device portfolio of recent years was the introduction of the iPhone 6 Plus earlier this year; whilst Apple have previously made flagship handsets bigger, the iPhone 6 Plus is the first time the company has entered into the phablet arena but here they also face stiff competition. British Telecom is allegedly already in talks with UK network operator EE following the alleged approach by Telefonica to form a “strategic partnership” that would see BT buy the company’s UK operator O2. According to sources cited by Reuters, BT is currently in “early stage” talks with EE over a major deal which may yet present a challenge to Telefonica’s master plan. UK operator BT is rumoured to be in talks to buy O2 UK with O2’s parent company Telefonica seeking a strategic partnership with BT that would see it sell its mobile network in return for a 20% stake. According to a report on El Confidencial, Telefonica’s CEO César Alierta is exploring the partnership with BT to create a European Giant and whilst talks are at an advanced stage, “there is nothing concrete yet”. Chinese manufacturer Huawei have been producing handsets for many years (both as white-label for companies and under their own name) but one area where the company has particularly struggled is adoption of devices bearing its name in European and American markets. Earlier this year they announced the new Honor 6 smartphone for Europe and whilst it shares many hallmarks of other Huawei devices such as the Ascend P6, it does drop the Huawei branding. When considering the performance of a handset, attention is inevitably turned towards benchmarking applications such as GeekBench 3, 3D Mark and AnTuTu (to name a few). When comparing performance across iOS and Android, the number of compatible benchmark applications are limited but both GeekBench 3 and 3D Mark reveal some interesting facts. Huawei and Russian operator MegaFon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of 5G technology with a view to a potential launch in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The MoU builds on a partnership between the two companies that stretches back to the deployment of GSM in 2002. The MoU is likely to mean 5G services could become available to participants and guests at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and as part of the MoU, the two companies will work together to plan, build and deploy 5G network infrastructure. Steve Unger has been appointed as the new interim Chief Executive Officer set regulator Ofcom until the position is filled permanently in early 2015. Unger will replace Ed Richards, the current CEO, who has announced he is leaving his position at the end of the year. Unger, who holds a Master’s degree in Physics and a PhD in AstroPhysics, has previously held Director roles at Manet Telecom and the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes. O2 has followed in the footsteps of its rival networks and today has launched data sharer plans for individuals and families in the UK. The new plans, which start at £6 per month, offer up to 8GB data which can be shared across multiple devices or between family members. The Sharer Plan and Family Sharer Plan uses a customer’s data bundle and allows them to share it either across multiple devices and smart technology or between devices owned by different members of the family. Royal Mail on Wednesday warned that online giant Amazon’s own delivery service and increased competition from rival couriers has hampered progress and impacted revenues. The former state-owned British company said that Amazon’s plans to launch their own delivery service would cut the growth in the British parcel market for it and its rivals from 4-5 percent down to 1-2 percent.
