Here’s a surprise. Nokia has added one of the most wanted features to Windows Phone through a simple Extras+info update on Lumia devices running on the Amber update. It was previously revealed that Microsoft had added hooks to its Windows Phone GDR2 release for developers to latch on, and those were of the call and SMS blocking features that didn’t exist before. While we were hoping for some third party developer to do it, Nokia itself has come to the fore and added these much requested features to Windows Phone, which is much welcome. Yet another indication that Nokia is doing the work for Microsoft when it should be the other way in an ideal world.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Vs Galaxy Mega 6.3

Samsung was the first company to push the boundaries of a smartphone beyond 5 inches with their original Galaxy Note featuring a 5.3inch display and thus creating a new brand of devices – “phablets”. The Galaxy Note was a big hit and Samsung followed it up with Galaxy Note 2 having a bigger 5.5inch display. Samsung decided to go beyond 6inches after Huawei’s Ascend Mate with their Mega series.

bing-app-windows-phone-8

The Bing AppEx team had released its apps in preparation for the launch on Windows 8 last year, but they were nowhere to be seen on Windows Phone 8 which actually launched after Windows 8. It has been thus, a great example of how Microsoft, as a company, doesn’t work like a single entity. That has slightly changed now, with the team releasing their apps for Windows Phone 8. Following the latest update to the search app, the Bing apps, which were the only decently designed first party apps on Windows 8 like Bing News, Finance, Sports and Weather are now available on Windows Phone 8.

IDC – Windows Phone posts the fastest growth in 2Q13, Android leads the market at 79.3%

idc-vendors-marketshare

Last quarter, we saw how Windows Phone marketshare finally leaped ahead of BlackBerry, and the trend seems to continue here. In the second quarter of 2013, Windows Phone has posted the fastest growth amongst the top 5 smartphone OSes with 8.7 million units shipped, according to IDC, which lines up with growth expectations from other analysts. While the growth percentage is less than what Windows Phone had last quarter(133% – Q1, 77.6% – Q2), it is certainly good news for Windows Phone’s uptake as an operating system. On the other hand, Android shows no signs of slowing down while it is the exact opposite for Apple which has its marketshare reduced from 16.6% to 13.2% while growing slower than the market at 20%.

LG G2 Hands On

At an event in New York, LG announced its next generation flagship dubbed the G2. The phone is a fairly significant departure from the design language of the Optimus G. In fact the device comes off as a smartphone inspired by the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and this ideology is not restricted to the hardware of the G2. We’ve had some time with the handset and while not conclusive, here are our thoughts on LG’s latest.
