Hands on with Sony’s Android 4.4 UI on a Xperia Z2 – Double Tap to Wake, Gestures and more

Sony launched the Xperia Z2 at the Mobile World Congress event here in Barcelona, Spain. The Z2 is an evolutionary upgrade over the Z1 and fixes every complaint people had with the Z1, like it has a better display, a way better build with a stunningly thin and premium design and overall a better package for a flagship. This also includes the new software work that Sony has done, because the Z2 is the first Android 4.4 device from the company and it brings a lot of new improvements to the looks as well as features that previously didn’t exist. Motorola has started rolling out a minor Android KitKat update for the single SIM variant of the Moto G in Europe. This update brings back the USB on-the-go (OTG) support for the users with USB drivers and also fixes mobile network loss for some users. Some Moto G users in India have reported SIM related issues in the dual SIM version recently, after the KitKat update. This update might fix those issues. It crossed 5 million users in just four months after its launch on 12th December 2012 and has tripled its user base within 9 months. Japanese Internet giant Rakuten acquires Viber for $900 million

Rakuten, one of the world’s largest Internet services companies based in Japan has acquired Cyprus-based Viber Media, one of the popular cross-platform VoIP app maker for $900 million. Rakuten said it would enter global messaging market with this acquisition, and it already has vast global portfolio of services such as e-readers, financial services, baseball team and more. It acquired Toronto-based eReader business Kobo and several e-commerce providers. It owns 40 different services and seeks to become the world’s No. 1 Internet services company. Today it updated the Basemark X cross-platform benchmarking tool to version 1.1 and has also released it on Windows Phone 8. Basemark X that was released last year was based on Unity 4.0 gaming engine, the version 1.1 Unity gaming engine version 4.2.2. This also adds new features and a new test called Hangar. As usual you get configurable settings and score breakdown in results screen in the full version. Windows Phone 8.1 leak confirms SD card installation support, VPN and universal apps

Windows Phone 8.1 might be unveiled to the public only in April at the Build developer event, but some enterprising developers have already been able to get a preview of the SDK, as reported earlier by TheVerge. We had expected more information to pop up once it became available, and thanks to a redditor, who claims to be a high-profile WP app developer(there is proof), some details of the next big update to Microsoft’s mobile platform have leaked. While most of the details are developer-oriented, some of the long standing consumer complaints seem to have been resolved, like the support for installation of apps on the SD card, VPN support and the start of universal apps for Windows Store and Windows Phone Store.
