HTC has announced Desire U, the company’s new budget Android smartphone in Taiwan. It has a 4.0-inch (800 x 480 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1 GHz processor and runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with HTC Sense UI similar to the Desire V was launched in India last year, but this has single SIM support. NFC goes mainstream at the GSMA MWC 2013, Barcelona
Get ready Android and Windows Phone 8 users/attendees, the GSM association has sought to bring NFC into the mainstream at the Mobile World Congress 2013, Barcelona. And yes, Apple iPhone users will be left out of this huge initiative. Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 shows up in the wild
dday.it, an Italian site has managed to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 ahead of the MWC. First specifications of the Note 8.0 (GT-N5100) surfaced last week, and the Samsung CEO confirmed the Galaxy Note 8.0 for MWC 2013, earlier this week. The device in these grainy hands on images resembles the image that surfaced couple of days back, but this has a hardware home button, capacitive touch buttons for menu and back on either sides, similar to the Galaxy S3. Even this has a ear piece at the top, but the Samsung logo is present blow the ear piece instead of bottom. It would also have S Pen support according to previous rumors. Lenovo IdeaPhone K860 hands-on
We already saw the Lenovo IdeaPhone K860 in the hands-on images when it launched in India last year, now we have the hands-on video from the CES 2013. The Lenovo K860 is the company’s high-end Android smartphone that launched in India last November at a price tag of Rs. 28,499. It has a 5-inch (720 x 1280 pixels) HD IPS display with wide 178 degree viewing angle which looks good and the phone feels solid. It is powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor and it runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Lenovo’s custom UI.

Huawei Ascend W1 hands-on
Huawei unveiled the Ascend W1, the company’s first Windows Phone handset at the CES 2013 earlier this month. We got you the hands-on photo gallery of the Ascend W1 from the event earlier this month, here is the hands-on video of the device. Even though the device has a large 4-inch (800 x 480 pixels) WVGA IPS display, the phone feels compact in hand. The display has OGS Technology that reduces the light consumption for a brighter and more vivid display. It has a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with Adreno 305 GPU and runs on the latest Windows Phone 8 OS.

Carrier unlocking to be illegal in the United States starting January 26
It’s always hard to imagine how people are putting up with carrier restrictions in countries like the United States of America. While we Indians have been more than blessed with carrier independent phones from get go, it’s now apparently getting harder in the other side of the planet. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act(DMCA) had termed manual user level unlocking of phones illegal in October last year, but had provided a 90 day window for getting the phones unlocked. That 90 day window is getting over on January 26 this year, and from that day on, user unlocking of any phone will be termed illegal.

Huawei Ascend Mate hands-on
Huawei unveiled the Ascend Mate at the CES 2013 earlier this month. We got you the hands-on photo gallery of the Ascend Mate from the event earlier this month, here is the hands-on video of the device. The phone is huge in the hand and features a 6.1-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD IPS display with Corning Gorilla glass protection. It features magic touch technology that would let you use the phone even with gloves. Huwaei’s own 1.5 GHz quad-core Hi-Silicon K3V2 processor powers the smartphone, and it runs on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) with Huawei’s EmotionUI 1.5 on top.

Apple reports $54.5 billion revenue in Q1 2013, 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads sold
Apple has reported record quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion, equivalent to $13.81 per diluted share in their earnings for the Q1 2013 that ended December 29, 2012. The company has reported 18% increase in revenue YoY. The international sales in this quarter is 61% of the quarter’s revenue. Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads, 12.7 million iPods and 4.1 million Macs during the quarter. Apple introduced the iPad mini and the new 4th generation iPad with A6X chip and lightning port in the last quarter.
