Facebook continues to push its mobile first approach and is currently testing a new feature on the Android version. Facebook now wants to be always on with a persistent notification bar that displays your display picture and provides direct access to your newsfeed, friend requests, messages and notifications.

Micromax has partnered with Aircel and MediaTek to offer data and other benefits with Micromax devices including smartphones and tablets powered by MediaTek chips, Micromax dongle and data-enabled feature phones. These offers would be initially available across four Micromax devices – MMX 377G data card, Funbook Mini 410i tablet, A090 and X070 smartphones. These include data benefits for all these devices, cheaper local and STD call rates and WAP content worth Rs. 10,000 with these phones and the tablet. Samsung unveiled the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and the Gear Fit at the MWC 2014 last month. Samsung has revealed the pricing for the Gear 2 and the Gear Fit at an event in Taiwan. Samsung Galaxy Gear got priced at Rs. 22,990 when it launched in India last year. Samsung assured that the successor would be priced reasonably. The Gear 2 has been priced at NT$ 8,990 (Rs. 17,980 approx) and the Gear Fit is priced at NT$ 5,990 (Rs. 11,980 approx). Pricing for the Gear 2 Neo is not available yet.

Micromax has taken the approach of making its products talk rather than holding events and the Micromax Canvas Knight is one such device. The choice of Knight as a name does justice mainly because of its supreme build quality and appearance. Until now, the build quality used to be of concern to buyers, but with Canvas Knight, that wouldn’t be a problem. Micromax almost took care of everything in Knight – ranging from choice of design, build, display and camera.
Sony launched the Xperia E1 and Xperia E1 dual in India earlier this month. The Xperia E1 dual went on sale in India at a price tag of Rs. 9,400, now the Xperia E1 is now available from online retailer Infibeam for Rs. 8,980. It has a 4-inch (480 x 800 pixels) display, powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor and runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). OnePlus is a new company from China with executives from Oppo and they claim to be working on the “perfect” smartphone. Instead of revealing the smartphone first, OnePlus has been slowly, but steadily building hype around their product – OnePlus One. OnePlus One is supposed to be the perfect smartphone that they are building and they have tied up with CyanogenMod Inc to provide the OS for them.

We had unboxed the Nokia X a while back, right after it launched in India. Only a few weeks back, Espoo’s first bold entry into the low end Android smartphone segment was revealed at MWC. The phone might be running Android, a Google owned entity, but is completely devoid of anything that resembles Google services. Nokia completely forked the open source variant of Android, just like Amazon did, by choosing not to include Google services and apps, which are obviously a conflict of interests for the company. But being open source, the malleable Android is always willing to bend to our will, and soon enough, enterprising developers who got their hands on the Nokia X, devised a way to install Google apps and services onto this neat little device. We followed their path, and made a video, so that willing users can take advantage of it too –

Samsung is planning to launch a variant of its Gear 2 smartwatch capable of making voice calls without connecting to a smartphone, according to a report from Korean Herald. Samsung plans to release the new version of the Gear 2 in Korea in partnership with the local operator SK Telecom. This would have a built-in SIM card or USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) to use it as a standalone mobile device. It was confirmed earlier this week and comes with a 5.5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display based on OGS technology and 178-degree wide viewing angle, powered by a 1.4 GHz / 1.7 GHz Octa-Core MediaTek MT6592 processor with Mali 450 GPU and runs on MIUI v5 based on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). HTC has not yet launched its flagship device of this year, but we know it is just a week away before it launches the all new HTC One. In the meantime, HTC is also preparing a midrange Desire series smartphone. HTC had introduced the Desire 816 at MWC 2014 earlier this year and now plans to unveil the Desire 516.
