Acer unveiled the Liquid Z200, an entry-level smartphone last week ahead of Computex 2014. We got to check out the device that was on display on the show floor. The 4-inch WVGA display has limited viewing angles but the build quality is pretty good. The phone is powered by a dual-core MediaTek processor clocked at 1 GHz and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) out of the box, which is pretty good for an entry-level phone. Check out the hands-on below. Smartphone sales in India soar 186% in Q1 2014: IDC
Owing to migration of a large user base from feature phones to smartphones, India has recorded 186% growth in smartphone shipment in Q1 of 2014, according to IDC. The smartphone penetration in India still hovers at 10% and it is expected to grow due to a variety of factors including greater availability of low-cost devices and additional sales emphasis by top-flight vendors on less populous parts of the country.

PQI Gmobi iStick is a USB OTG Drive with Lightning connector for iPhone and iPad
PQI, one of the popular media storage peripheral brand has unveiled Gmobi iStick, a OTG storage device developed for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with lightning connectors at the Computex 2014 in Taipei. This device would be developed by California-based Sanho that has raised around US$859,000 on KickStarter campaign. PQI will distribute the device in Taiwan. Gionee Pioneer P2S that went on sale in India on the official Gionee online Store has been officially launched in India. It has a 4-inch WVGA display, powered by a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor with Mali 400 GPU and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It has a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) front-facing camera. It also has a new V-gesture shot that lets you capture selfies easily. Reliance Jio, Ascend Telecom sign tower sharing deal
Reliance Jio Infocomm, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Ascend Telecom Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. Under this deal, Reliance Jio would utilize Ascend Telecom’s 4500 towers across India for its 4G roll out. The company is backed by New Silk Route Growth Capital, IL&FS and the TVS Group. Prestigio, BLU and other OEMs announce Windows Phone 8.1 devices
At the Computex 2014 keynote, Microsoft showed off new smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1, manufactured by their new partners. This includes, Prestigio, BLU, YEZZ, InFocus. All these devices are based on Qualcomm reference design. Microsoft announced new OEMs at the MWC 2014 back in February and added couple more OEMs to the list at the Build 2014 in April. Recently the company announced BLU and Amagatarai K-Touch as their partners. New Windows Phone devices from new manufacturers is expected to increase the market share of Windows Phone. In a bid to further enhance its Internet.org initiative, Facebook has acquired mobile data startup Pryte for an undisclosed sum. Facebook’s Internet.org is a global project which aims to provide mobile internet access to users in underdeveloped parts of the world.
Ostendo’s chip to bring Hologram technology to smartphones
Ostendo Technologies is working on advanced chip that can bring hologram technology to our smartphones. The California based company has created a tiny Tic Tac-sized projector that can project visible 3D holograms and bring us closer to virtual reality, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Android 4.4.3 update rolling out for Google Play Edition HTC One (M7), M8, Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z Ultra
Google released Android KitKat factory images for Nexus devices and Motorola also announced that it will bring the latest update to its devices (X, G and E) this week. Now, owners of Google Play Edition HTC One M7, M8 and Sony Z Ultra are receiving the 4.4.3 update. HTC has also uploaded the kernel source for this update for the One M7 and M8 devices.

Motorola which has bounced back in the smartphone business with its budget and mid range smartphones is now moving to accessories. The company has launched a bluetooth audio streaming device that connects to your smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer up to 300 feet of “roam range”.

Instagram 6.0 to bring advanced editing features, compete with VSCO Cam
Instagram’s focus so far has been on simplicity and while the company did start building in more features, the focus still remained on the 18 filters built in. Instagram, now owned by Facebook, has been able to build a huge community by leveraging this simplicity. Now it is about to take a step forward by adding in extensive editing controls.
Instagram 6.0, set to roll out over the next few days for both iOS and Android, will let you adjust contrast, saturation, warmth, brightness, highlights, shadows, vignettes and sharpness in all photos. This brings it right in line with some of the more advanced editing applications out there. Tapping the tool brings up a slider that you can use to make adjustments on a 100 point scale. This works across all the variables involved. Additionally, Instagram 6.0 also allows you to adjust filter strength which is something that can come in extremely handy depending on the image involved.
