Worldwide wearable shipments up 10.3% YoY in 2017, Apple leads with 15.3% market share: IDC

According to IDC, the worldwide wearables market continued to grow in both the Q4 and whole of 2017 with the total shipments reaching a new record. Apple moved past Fitbit and Xiaomi to become the leader in the wearable market worldwide. The total volumes of the quarter reached 37.9 million units, which is up 7.7% from the 35.2 million units shipped YoY. The wearable market in India is progressively gaining momentum owing to its affordability, thanks to Chinese counterparts. Xiaomi Amazfit BIP smartwatch with 45 days battery life, GPS, multi-sport tracking goes global, priced at $99

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Huami introduced its Amazfit BIP smartwatch in China back in August last year. Now the company has launched the smartwatch in the U.S. It has a 1.28-inch always-on color touch display and promises over 30 days of battery life with normal use or up to 45 days with minimal notifications on a single charge. It has GPS, barometer, heart rate sensor and 3-axis accelerometer for activity, sports and sleep tracking. Fitbit to end support for Pebble smartwatches on June 30

Fitbit today has made it clear once and for all that it will end support for Pebble smartwatches on June 30. Fitbit acquired Pebble along with smartwatch team and assets related to their software platform back in 2016. The company will put an end to most of Pebble’s features including App Store, the forum, cloud development tool, voice recognition features, and SMS and email replies. Fitbit Ionic Review

It’s surprising how long it has taken for Fitbit to launch a smartwatch. Focussing on budget or mid range fitness trackers, we finally got the Blaze in 2016 which had a smartwatch like interface but none of the capabilities. Announced back in August, the Ionic has all the ingredients that you expect in a smart peripheral. Apps, payment capabilities, watch faces and more, it ticks all the boxes. With the abundant options available though, the Ionic will need to be greater than the sum of its parts. Does it deliver? We spent a week with the Fitbit Ionic to find that out. Garmin Forerunner 645 Music GPS running watch with on-device music storage announced

Samsung’s Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX were one of the first devices with support for on-device music storage, now Garmin has introduced the first smartwatch that lets you store music for offline listening. It can store up to 500 songs so that you can connect a Bluetooth headset and play them when you are working out, without the need of a smartphone.
