Codenames of upcoming Sony smartphones – D200X (D2004, D2005) and D210X (D2104, D2105) appeared online recently, and these upcoming Xperia smartphones have codes names Falcon SS (D200X) and Falcon DS (D210X), respectively, as mentioned on the FCC. Sony has announced and launched a very interesting USB storage device that can connect to both PCs and Smartphones. In the days where smartphone storage is becoming increasingly insufficient, Sony has launched a USB device with microUSB port on side and a regular USB port on the other. The tiny device can be used as an external storage for smartphones. Earlier this year, we unboxed a similar Verbatim USB OTG drive and Sony has followed in the footsteps of Verbatim, but have greatly reduced the size of the device making it very compact and easy to use.
Recently, Sony updated their latest flagships – Sony Xperia Z1 and Sony Xperia Z Ultra to Android 4.3 Jellybean. While the whole industry is currently working on bringing Android 4.4 KitKat to its device, Sony is a little behind the curve as it is just rolling out Android 4.3 Jellybean.
After two rounds of really close battles between 8 smartphones, we have come to the finals of the SmartFone 13 championship for the best smartphone of 2013. Two devices have made it to the finals and they are – Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Sony Xperia Z1. Both the phones are awesome on their own and have beaten two other capable smartphones to reach this stage, which removes even an iota of doubt on how great these two devices are. Both being the companies’ respective flagships are packed with innovations as well as top class features. But which one do you think is the best of the two? At IFA 2013 in Berlin, which was held during September, Sony launched their latest flagship Android smartphone – Sony Xperia Z1 and a couple of WiFi enabled QX series lens. Sony’s QX 10 and QX 100 received a lot of acclaim from the industry and are now all set to receive a firmware update. According to Engadget, the update will be coming to the two lenses sometime in January and the update is expected to improve the camera performance.

Round 2 of the SmartFone 2013 championship had begun yesterday with a really close competition between the LG G2 vs Nokia Lumia 1020, and today it’s the turn of Google Nexus 5 and the Sony Xperia Z1 to fight it out in our battleground. After winning massively over the iPhone 5s, the Nexus 5 is in contention with the Xperia Z1 which initially trailed so close with the Note 3 and later pulled a massive lead out of the hat. Both these devices are flagships and have their own advantages and disadvantages, so which one do you want to vote for? Time to decide!

Sony has announced that they have started rolling out a new WALKMAN update (version 8.0.A.0.4) for the Z series devices that brings new playlist features. Sony updated all the media apps on these devices back in August and introduced “smart playlist” feature in the WALMAN app recently. The new update also brings new TrackID features and new playlist and preview features in Music Unlimited regions. Sony is yet to start rolling out the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update for their devices, but an XDA user has posted Android 4.3 (v10.4.B.0.569) ROMs for the Xperia Z (C6603) and the Xperia ZL (C6503). The version is tagged as “Commercial&Journalists”, so it is not clear if this would the final version, which is expected to roll out later this month. The phone was just spotted on the Google Play Store in the US and is available now at a price point of $649 before taxes . Interesting this is one of the first Sony devices running stock Android.

We initiated the first round of polls for the SmartFone championship for the best smartphone of 2013 today. Samsung Galaxy S4 and the LG G2 were the first contenders, but, as we had pondered earlier, Samsung seems to be the only company with two flagship devices in their portfolio, which cater to different audiences at the same time. So we thought it is fair enough that Samsung has another device in our polls. On the other hand, Sony, the company that had been so late to the party on the past few years finally sped up with the launch of the Xperia Z, one of the world’s first 1080p phones, but it has already gotten a replacement in the form of a Sony Xperia Z1, which takes the speed up a notch, having all the latest specifications in a similar package, and with a great new camera. So, how do these two compete? Which one is your pick?
