Sony has announced that they have started rolling out a new WALKMAN update (version 8.0.A.0.4) for the Z series devices that brings new playlist features. Sony updated all the media apps on these devices back in August and introduced “smart playlist” feature in the WALMAN app recently. Sony is yet to start rolling out the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update for their devices, but an XDA user has posted Android 4.3 (v10.4.B.0.569) ROMs for the Xperia Z (C6603) and the Xperia ZL (C6503). The version is tagged as “Commercial&Journalists”, so it is not clear if this would the final version, which is expected to roll out later this month. The phone was just spotted on the Google Play Store in the US and is available now at a price point of $649 before taxes . Interesting this is one of the first Sony devices running stock Android.

We initiated the first round of polls for the SmartFone championship for the best smartphone of 2013 today. Samsung Galaxy S4 and the LG G2 were the first contenders, but, as we had pondered earlier, Samsung seems to be the only company with two flagship devices in their portfolio, which cater to different audiences at the same time. So we thought it is fair enough that Samsung has another device in our polls. On the other hand, Sony, the company that had been so late to the party on the past few years finally sped up with the launch of the Xperia Z, one of the world’s first 1080p phones, but it has already gotten a replacement in the form of a Sony Xperia Z1, which takes the speed up a notch, having all the latest specifications in a similar package, and with a great new camera. So, how do these two compete? Which one is your pick?

Earlier this month Sony announced the list of devices that would get the Android 4.4 KitKat update. Now the Sony Mobile support page shows that the Xperia SP would also get the Android 4.4 update. All the devices that would get the Android 4.4 update would get the Android 4.3 update starting from December 2013. Some devices would directly be upgraded to Android 4.3 from Android 4.1 starting from December, and the Android KitKat update for these devices are under investigation. Sony announced the Sony Xperia Z1 at the IFA 2013 in Berlin as the company’s latest flagship. Sony Xperia Z1 is the successor of Xperia Z and gets improvement in almost all the departments.
Samsung Galaxy S4 was announced during March and was available in the market since April. Galaxy S4 was the successor of Galaxy S3 and it featured an all-round improvement and it was the first smartphone to come with an octa-core processor.

Sony introduced their first camera centric flagship – Sony Xperia Z1 at the IFA 2013 in Berlin. Sony Xperia Z1 had leaked numerous times prior to launch and when Sony announced it, nothing came as a surprise – even the 20.7MP camera. Sony Xperia Z1 has the biggest camera sensor on an Android smartphone, even bigger than the one on the camera-phone – Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, but without the optical zoom.
Sony Xperia Z Ultra was launched by Sony sometime back before the IFA and it was Sony’s first phablet with a gigantic screen that was just millimeters away from being a tablet. Sony Xperia Z Ultra was the first smart device(we will try to avoid the term “phone”) to run on Snapdragon 800 and it sported a huge 6.44inch Full HD display. Xperia Z Ultra was a Galaxy Note competitor with a huge screen, but no in-built stylus. Sony announced that any pointed input item like a pencil could be used to write on the display instead of a single restricted stylus.

Sony Stylus ES22, a new stylus pen for the Xperia Z Ultra has appeared on the the official website. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra with a 6.44 Inch full HD Triluminous display was launched in India back in July, and we reviewed it in August. Since the phone has a super sensitive screen, you can use any stylus, a ordinary pencil or even a standard pen to interact with the touch screen, even though it doesn’t not detect pressure changes. Sony Mobile confirmed the first set of devices that would get the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update for range of devices back in July. Now the company has announced that they would roll out the Android 4.3 update for those devices starting from December. These devices include, Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1. Sony had also announced that elect (2012) Xperia devices running Android 4.1 would be updated directly to 4.3, skipping the Android 4.2. Now the company has revealed that the Xperia T, Xperia TX and the Xperia V will be upgraded to Android Jelly Bean 4.3 from next month.
