In a courageous and cunning move, Nokia launched its new series of Android devices under the X moniker, a ploy to capture the entry level Smartphone segment, which they had initially planned to capture with the Asha platform. Three devices at different price points were launched, with the XL being launched at a higher 109 EUR price point. Sporting hardware design from the Asha phones and software design from Lumia, Nokia wants to create familiarity to Windows Phone in the low end and hopes to catch aspiring buyers and make them move to their hopefully more profitable platform. But the pricing is treacherously close to their low end Lumias, which might just end up cannibalizing the sales of the latter, even when providing a choice with similar hardware. The XL, a 5 inch Android phone with almost the same or better specifications than the Lumia 520, poses a threat, or may be is it opportunity for Nokia and Microsoft?

Amongst the high spec devices launched by Sony, the M2 emerged as the device aimed at the mid range segment. The phone that has a design language decidedly similar to the flagship Z2. The front of the phone has a large 4.8 inch display that has a resolution of 540×960 pixels. First impressions with the hardware definitely left a positive impression as we quite liked the solid construction. BlackBerry has just announced the BlackBerry Z3, the company’s latest affordable full-touch smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. This is the first smartphone made by Foxconn, after their strategic partnership back in December. It has a 5-inch display, powered by a dual-core processor and runs on the latest BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1.

Broadcom Corporation has announced BCM4354, the first 5G WiFi (802.11ac) 2×2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system-on-a-chip (SoC) for smartphones at the MWC 2014 in Barcelona. This offer better Wi-Fi performance, up to 25% power compared to the 1×1 MIMO devices used in smartphones, says Broadcom. This offers faster uploads and downloads even in crowded places. Samsung unveiled the most expected Galaxy S5 smartphone at the MWC 2014 few hours back. The Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC) processor clocked at 2.45 GHz. A new infographic, comparing all the Galaxy S series devices on the Samsung blog reveals that the Galaxy S5 would also come in a Octa-Core variant clocked at 2.1GHz. It has a 5.1-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) Super AMOLED display, powered by a 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) with Samsung own UI on top. It has a 16-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash, 4K video recording, HDR (Rich tone), Selective Focus, Virtual Tour Shot and more new features and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. Samsung claims that the phone has world’s fastest auto focus speed up to 0.3 seconds. It has IP67 ratings for Dust and water Resistance.

The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-E1 runs on Windows Embedded 8 Handheld platform and is powered by a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AB) processor, and the Toughpad FZ-X1 runs Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and is powered by a 1.7 GHz Qualcomm S4 Pro (APQ8064T) processor. At MWC 2014 in Barcelona, alongside its new Nokia X series of Android powered budget smartphones, Nokia announced an addition to their Asha lineup in the form of Nokia Asha 230. Nokia Asha 230 is the newest and most affordable touch enabled Asha phone yet. Being a touch based Asha phone, it shares most of its design traits from the Asha lineup and comes with slightly rounded corners.

At MWC 2014 in Barcelona, Nokia announced a series of devices that defied its partnership with Microsoft a couple of years back. Finally, Nokia announced its own Android running smartphones. But there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. Nokia hasn’t embraced Google or its services through Android, but opened up Microsoft’s services via Android fork.
HTC is having a presence at the MWC 2014 despite not launching its flagship smartphone here. At the event, HTC launched a couple of mid-range Android smartphones – HTC Desire 816 and HTC Desire 610. Among the two, the HTC Desire 610 is the more humbly speced device with a moderate spec sheet.
SanDisk Corporation has announced the company’s new 128GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I (Class 10) memory card for smartphones and tablets at the MWC 2014. This is the world’s largest capacity microSD card for smart devices. The first 128MB micro SD card was launched in 2004, it took just 10 years to bring memory capacity of 128GB.
