Xiaomi sells 26.1 million smartphones in first half of 2014

Xiaomi today announced that it has sold 26.11 million smartphones in the first half of 2014. This is a 271% increase compared to its sales last year. In the year 2012 the company shipped 7.19 million units, and in 2013 it shipped 18.7 million units, so it has already exceeded the combined sales of both 2012 and 2013 within the first half of 2014.

Disney has tied up with Japan’s LINE Corporation to launch the popular Disney Tsum Tsum puzzle game globally. This was published by LINE in Japan last year and holds the number 1 free app spot on both iOS and Android in Japan. Disney has also launched  stackable Tsum Tsum toys in select stores in North America and at Disney Parks. Last year Gameloft teamed up with LINE to launch LINE Let’s Golf game. Asus Padfone 2 gets Android 4.4 KitKat with ZenUI

Asus has released the Android 4.4 (KitKat) update for the Padfone 2, the company’s second Padfone device that was launched back in 2012, as it promised earlier this year. The KitKat update also brings new Asus ZenUI 1.1 with a new user interface. The ZenUi brings clean layout, flat icons, new color themes, animations, new ringtone and notification tones. Twitter buys mobile ad-tech startup TapCommerce

Twitter is continuing its shopping spree with another acquisition. The micro blogging firm has acquired ad tech firm TapCommerce to expand its mobile marketing platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by either of the company, however Re/code reports that the deal is worth $100 million.

Xiaomi is all set to enter India really soon, with a portfolio of devices to be sold using the online-only business model, but in anticipation, we had already gotten the Mi3, the company’s flagship device. Selling for a low price, the Xiaomi Mi3 hopes to offer what every other flagship offers, but at a fraction of the price, much like the recently launched One Plus One. The Mi3 has a nice minimalistic design and solid build, but also packs powerful internals including a Snapdragon 800 processor that drives a 5″ 1080p display and also powers the camera experience on the device. We are going to focus on the camera part in this post specifically, to show how it performs in different conditions. Samsung has just announced the Galaxy S5 mini (SM-G800H), a smaller variant of the Galaxy S5. It has a 4.5-inch (720 x 1280 pixels) Super AMOLED display, powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) with new Touchwiz UI. It has a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash, 1080p video recording and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. It has IP67 ratings for dust and water resistance, similar to Galaxy S5. Google bids adieu to Orkut, will shut it down on Sept 30

Google is finally pulling the plug on Orkut, its first effort in social network. The ten year old social network will shut down its operations on September 30 and existing users will be able to export their information using Google Takeout until September 2016. However, new users will not be able to create accounts.
