Samsung’s 2020 profits up 29.6% YoY, mobile profits up 23.7% YoY; new Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models confirmed for 2021

Samsung has reported its earnings for Q4 2020 and the whole of 2020 that ended December 31, 2020. In Q4 2020 the company has made an operating profit of 9.05 trillion won, up 26.39% YoY. This is due to strong display and memory chip businesses, but fell 26.7% compared to Q3 2020 due to weaker memory prices and sluggish consumer products sales, as well as higher marketing costs and negative impact from the Korean won’s appreciation. After the launch of Galaxy M02s earlier this month, Samsung has officially confirmed the launch of Galaxy M02, the company’s new budget smartphone in the Galaxy M series in India on February 2nd. Airtel says its network is 5G ready; successfully demonstrates live 5G services in Hyderabad

Airtel today announced that it has become the country’s first telcom performance to successfully demonstrate and orchestrate live 5G service over a commercial network in Hyderabad city. Airtel said that this has been carried out over its existing liberalised spectrum in the 1800MHz band through the NSA (Non Stand Alone) network technology using Ericsson 4G (DSS) radio infrastructure on OPPO Reno5 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro smartphones. Worldwide smartphone market record 385.9 million shipments, 4.3% YoY growth in Q4 2020: IDC

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released their report for worldwide smartphone shipments in the 4th quarter of 2020 and for the entire year. The smartphone market shipped a total of 385.9 million during Q4, which calculates to a modest growth of 4.3% and showing improved signs of recovery.

Apple reports $28.8 billion profit on all-time record $111.4 billion revenue in FY Q1 2021

Apple has reported quarterly revenue of $111.4 billion, an all-time revenue record, which is up 21.3% YoY. It posted a net profit of $28.8 billion, up 29.7% YoY and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $1.68, up 35% YoY for the financial year Q1 2021 that ended December 26, 2020. During the earnings call Tim Cook said that Apple saw strong double-digit growth across every product category, and achieved all-time revenue records in each of the geographic segments. India smartphone shipments reach 150 million units in 2020, records 4% decline YoY: Counterpoint Research

Despite being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian smartphone market recorded a decline of only 4% for the year 2020, shipping more than 150 million units in total. According to Counterpoint Research, the top 5 companies for the year were Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, realme and OPPO.

Indian Government to ban 59 Chinese apps including TikTok permanently; TikTok cuts workforce in India

Back in June last year the Indian Government announced a ban on 59 Chinese mobile apps including TikTok and Helo saying that they are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order. Now  there are reports that says that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sent new notice to these apps last week saying that their answers and clarifications following the ban were found to be inadequate, so the temporary block has now been made permanent. Carl Pei launches new smart venture called ‘NOTHING’; first smart devices coming in H1 2021

Carl Pei, who co-founded OnePlus today launched ‘Nothing’, which he says is a new forward-thinking consumer technology company based in London. This comes after receiving $7 million (approx Rs. 52 crores) in a Seed funding round from a list of high-profile investors such as Tony Fadell, Casey Neistat, Kevin Lin, Steve Huffman and Josh Buckley for the new hardware venture. Last week, the company raised undisclosed funding from CRED Founder Kunal Shah.
