HTC One first impressions

HTC’s latest Android phone is one of its most important releases yet. The company’s recent fortunes have been anything but rosy, and with rivals like Samsung and Sony producing some incredible handsets of late, the Taiwanese veteran really needs a best-seller to restore it to its former glories. We brought you the HTC One unboxing last month, here are our first impressions of the device. At first glance, the HTC One feels like that phone. From the brushed-metal casing to the gorgeous, “better than HD” Super LCD3 screen, the handset is dressed to impress. It feels solid and well-made, avoiding the plastic feel which is so common with Samsung’s popular Galaxy S range. Continue reading “HTC One first impressions”

HTC One UltraPixel camera samples and full HD video sample

htc-one-unboxing-4

The HTC One that we recently unboxed was really hyped up by HTC for one special feature, the camera. Bucking the trend, HTC went for a different approach by not counting on the megapixels. With just a 4 MP sensor, touting the pixels as an “Ultrapixel”, HTC sought out better image quality coupled with Optical Image Stabilization for better low light performance instead of the never ending megapixel race. Not only that, they also have a new video and still image experience in terms of software with HTC Zoe, capturing all the important memories in a sequential manner, without having to worry about missing a moment. All said, how is the real world performance like? Head on past the break for some camera samples in really testing conditions and a video sample from the HTC One.

Mugen Power 6000mAh Battery Case for HTC One X Review

Android based smartphones are notorious for having not so great battery life. This can be due to the hardware combination as in the case of the HTC One X with its power hungry Tegra 3 processor or just because of heavy usage by the owner.

Mugen-Battery-HTC-One-X-1

With that in mind, it is always a great idea to buy a spare battery or external battery pack but what do you do when you have a device like the One X without an interchangeable battery pack ? You look at Mugen for a solution. Famous for making a wide range of after market high capacity battery packs, they hooked us up with a unit for the HTC One X.

Mugen-Battery-HTC-One-X-3

At the first glance you’ll notice just how massive the battery pack is. With a whopping 6,000 mAh of power it can power up the phone almost 3 times from scratch. We’ve been using the battery pack over the past few months to gauge real life usability and long term appeal. The Mugen battery pack for the HTC One X simply snaps on to the back of the handset.

The charging pins built into the pack and the provided on the back of the handset facilitate an easy connection and doesn’t require you to block the micro USB port.

Over at the back of the pack you’ll find the led indicators and a button to activate them. The leds indicate charging status and the amount of charge left. The battery pack is made of soft touch plastic that picks up a lot of scratches over time. In fact our only gripe with the unit was the not so great quality of plastics used. A matte finished hard plastic body would perhaps feel and look more premium.

Mugen-Battery-HTC-One-X-7

Coming to battery performance itself, the unit lives up to its promise and delivers what its says on the box. The battery pack has got us out of many sticky situations where having that extra amount of juice was very helpful. At almost $100, it is definitely on the pricey side but if you need a battery pack that’ll get you through a day or more, this should be your top choice. The weight and size of the unit can be a bit daunting and just because of that, Mugen offers a 3000 mAh as well that has a much slimmer profile. You can take a look at the unit over at Mugen Power’s website by following the link.

HTC One Unboxing

If there is a fading brand in the world of smart phones, especially in the Android space, it would be HTC. We have been hearing a lot about how HTC has supposedly been falling in the past couple of years. Their HTC One X and series of devices were considered an initiative for a turn around in 2012, and the same mantra is now being applied for the HTC One, their newest 2013 flagship device that launched just before the Mobile World Congress. This flagship from HTC is one of their most interesting efforts. You can see the fruits in every department including design, build, hardware, and definitely the camera. We have had some hands on experience of the One at the Mobile World Congress, but we now have it in our labs. And as a precursor, we start with the ritualistic unboxing of the device.

HTC Butterfly vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2

The HTC Butterfly is one of the recent 1080p devices that have gone and touched the 5 inch form factor in size, and hence it raises a new question. Is it too big for a smartphone? or is it too small for a tablet? I can already sense a lot of gasps after that question, but truth be told, that category has been invented by none other than Samsung, with its original Galaxy Note, with a 5.3 inch screen. Samsung upped its “phablet” game with the Galaxy Note 2, with the 5.5 inch screen, making it the only device that kinda bridges the gap between a phone and a tablet. Some manufacturers have followed suit, like Huawei, with its Ascend Mate, but with HTC releasing the Butterfly with a 5 inch screen, does it enter the phablet game? And what other differences arise between the Galaxy Note 2 and the Butterfly considering that they are the two of the three costliest devices in the market? Watch our in-depth video comparison to find out –

Hands on with the HTC One

HTC have been having a rough couple of quarters to say the least. Falling marketshare, dwindling margins and revenue, vanishing stock price compounded by a domineering samsung in the Android space has been hard on them. Yet, they’ve managed to release top device after top device, all to find that the market hasn’t been as taken by their devices as the technology media have. The HTC One, launched today is their attempt to change all that.  Continue reading “Hands on with the HTC One”
