NFC-enabled handset shipments reach 30 million units in 2011

According to a report by research firm Berg Insight, global shipments of handsets featuring Near Field Communication (NFC) has reached 30 million units in 2011 from about 3 million units in 2010. Google considering sharing revenue with carriers to stimulate Wallet adoption

Reports suggest that Google might be considering sharing revenues from Google Wallet with AT&T and Vodafone to help stimulate usage. The service currently only works on one network and device ie the Sprint Nexus S 4G. Sprint plans to out 10 more Wallet supported devices later this year.

Samsung and Visa to showcase NFC mobile payment app for London Olympics at MWC

Samsung and Visa has announced the official mobile payments application of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. They confirmed the partnership to introduce NFC payments in 2012 Olympic games last April. The application is based on Visa’s payWave technology that enables contactless payments at the Point of Sale. Recent investigation has unveiled glaring security holes in the Google Wallet NFC payment service which lets a person gain access to the secret Wallet pin. SK Telecom introduces NFC enabled SIM cards

SK Telecom , a Korea based telecom operator , has just introduced its next generation USIM cards which add NFC capabilities to phones lacking it. NFC is used to enable cell phone based payments , mobile advertisements and even peer to peer communications.

Photo Sharing through NFC in Nokia Symbian Belle Phones

We had the chance to check out the NFC feature in the newly announced Symbian Belle Phones. You can transfer photos from one phone to another by merely tapping the phones together.  Watch the video below to see the technology in action. In the first part of the video a photo is clicked with a Nokia 600 and is sent to another device via NFC or Near Field Communication.  In the second part a wallpaper is shared in a similar fashion.
