Nokia to Launch Free Maps App for iOS

Today, Nokia announced that it will release a new mapping service called “Here” to Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The HTML5 based maps will offer offline capabilities, voice guided walk navigation, and public transportation directions. Nokia said that Here will be made available for download via the iOS App Store in the coming weeks.

“People want great maps, and with Here we can bring together Nokia’s location offering to deliver people a better way to explore, discover and share their world,” said Nokia President and CEO Stephen Elop. “Additionally, with HERE we can extend our 20 years of location expertise to new devices and operating systems that reach beyond Nokia. As a result, we believe that more people benefit from and contribute to our leading mapping and location service.”

This new mapping service will also be made available on its own hardware that runs Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. In addition, Here will also be made available on Google’s Android and Mozilla’s Firefox OS.

Shipping Estimates for iPhone 5 Improve

Minutes after the first batch of iPhone 5 pre-orders went live, shipping estimates were pushed back to 3-4 weeks due to popular demand. Today, for the first time, shipping estimates for new orders of the iPhone 5 placed through Apple’s online store have improved to 2-3 weeks.  The new shipping time applies to both the black and slate as well as the white and silver models, in all three capacities.

This new shipping estimate seems to be in effect for most of Apple’s online stores around the world where the iPhone 5 is sold online.

BlackBerry 10 launching worldwide on January 30th 2013

RIM has just announced that the BlackBerry 10 would be launched simultaneously in multiple countries at separate events around the world on 30th January 2013. RIM showed off first BlackBerry Dev Alpha device running BlackBerry OS 10 back in May, and they revealed the Dev Alpha B in September with lot of new features and improvements. BlackBerry 10 got FIPS 140-2 US government security certification last week. Sony Xperia SL Unboxing

Sony Xperia SL went on sale in India back in September, but Sony launched it officially few weeks back. Here we have the unboxing of the Sony Xperia SL. It looks similar to the Sony Xperia S that we reviewed earlier this year, including a 4.3 inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, 12MP camera with LED flash and a 1.3MP front-facing camera, but it powered by a faster 1.7 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 processor with Adreno 220 GPU and comes with Android 4.0 out of the box.

Samsung ATIV Odyssey Windows Phone 8 handset leaked

At its Windows Phone 8 launch event last month, Microsoft had revealed a 2nd Samsung WP8 device which would head to Verizon. This handset would accompany the higher end ATIV S. Samsung ATIV S hands-on

Recently we got a chance to play with the Samsung ATIV S running Windows Phone 8. While HTC and Nokia have already brought their WP8 devices to market, the ATIV S is Samsung’s top end WP8 handset and is yet anywhere. Like competing WP8 devices, the ATIV S too is powered by a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor paired with 1GB of RAM.

Skype for Windows Phone 8 (Preview) now available


Microsoft unveiled a new Skype app for Windows Phone 8 devices couple of weeks back, now the preview version of the app is available for the Windows Phone 8 devices. Skype for Windows Phone 8 has been completely built from the ground up for better integration with the Windows Phone 8 and has a completely new UI, better notifications and more. The first Skype for Windows Phone app was launched back in February, and it was launched in Windows Phone Marketplace in April. Apple Airs Two New iPad Mini Television Ads

Today, Apple has started to air two new TV ads for the iPad mini. The company previously released  the “Piano” ad that was shown during the iPad mini media event.

The first ad is called “Books“, which demonstrates the abilities of the iPad mini as an e-reader. In the ad, a full-size iPad and the iPad mini are both side-by-side opening and closing books in iBooks. As MacRumors points out, the ad uses classy pairings of books to show comparisons between the larger and smaller iPads:  The Sun Also Rises and The Valley of the MoonEast of Eden and How the West Was Won; and, Moby Dick and Gone Fishing.

The second ad is called “Photos“, which uses a similar side by side presentation style as the other two iPad mini ads. This ad shows off iPhoto for iOS with the 60’s classic song Two of a Kind by Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer in the background.

 

Draw Something and Words With Friends now available for Windows Phone devices, Free for Nokia Lumia phones

Draw Something and Words With Friends are finally available for Windows Phone devices. Nokia announced back in June that they entered into a partnership with Zynga to bring Words With Friends and Draw Something to Nokia Lumia Smartphones. These games are now available for free for the Lumia Smartphones from the Nokia collection and all the Windows Phone devices running Windows Phone 7.5 and later from the Windows Phone Store. Google Nexus 4 Pictures

LG and Google unveiled the Nexus 4,new Smartphone in the Nexus family at the end of October. It has a 4.7-inch (1280 × 768 pixels) display with 320 ppi and corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection, 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with Adreno 320 GPU and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). The Nexus 4 is priced at $299 for the 8GB version and the 16GB version comes at a price tag of $349. It is expected to go on sale from November 13 in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Australia. Aakash 2 low-cost Tablet launched, UbiSlate 7Ci goes on sale

Aakash 2 ultra low-cost tablet, successor of Aaksash tablet was launched by the President of India , Pranab Mukherjee and the Human Resources & Development (HRD) Minister, MM Pallam Raju. It comes at a price tag of Rs. 1,130 for students, while the commercial version, UbiSlate 7Ci is available for purchase at Rs. 4,499. DataWind would supply 100,000 units of Aakash 2 to IIT Bombay and also aims to distribute them to Engineering colleges and universities. It comes with upgraded specifications including a 7-inch (800 x 480 pixels) capacitive touch screen display and runs on Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Apple and HTC enter 10 year cross licensing agreement, settle patent litigation

To put an end to their long pending patent dispute, HTC and Apple have entered into a global settlement which includes a 10 year cross licensing agreement. The news was revealed in a join statement released by HTC and Apple. The deal covers all current and future patents by the companies.

Nokia 808 PureView, the phone with a 41MP camera sensor has got a price cut, which is now available for Rs. 24,999.  Nokia announced the Nokia 808 PureView at MWC 2012 and it launched in India in June at an MRP of Rs. 33,899. It has a 4-inch (640 x 360 pixels) AMOLED CBD display with Gorilla Glass protection, 1.3 GHz processor and runs on Nokia Belle OS.
