MWC: A week with Vodafone Eurotraveller

Just over a week ago we were in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress 2015 and, as I have done for many years now, I used my Vodafone SIM card with EuroTraveller to provide me data whilst on the ground. It’s been a year since we were last in MWC and in that time, Vodafone have introduced 4G Roaming in Spain alongside double speed 4G across their European network.

Traditionally Barcelona has really poor mobile data speeds (whether using a local SIM or roaming) during the MWC week as 90,000+ people descend upon the city for the annual conference. Ahead of the trip, I expected the traditional data coverage and speeds issues with previous years suggesting large ping times, really slow speeds and overall, a lack of reliable data. Motorola India recently partnered with Airtel to offer free data for Moto E, Moto G (2nd Gen) and Moto X (2nd Gen) users. Airtel pre-paid users get free data for two months, while post-paid users get bill discounts per month for 2 months on subscription of 3G and 2G data packs. This offer is available for both existing and new Motorola smartphone users, but it can be activated only once on an IMEI. BlackBerry launched the BlackBerry Classic smartphone with full QWERTY physical keyboard back in December last year. Now it has launched a camera-less version of the smartphone for Verizon Wireless in the U.S. This lacks both the 8-megapixel auto focus rear camera and LED Flash and the 2-megapixel front facing camera. This non-camera model will help people in enterprise businesses use the BlackBerry Classic, since some companies restricts smartphones with a camera and also encourage BYOD culture. Pan-India Mobile Number Portability will be available from May 3

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had released recommendations for Pan-India Mobile Number Portability (MNP) back in September 2013. At that time it said that it would recommend 6 months for the operators to roll out full MNP across the country. Later on 3rd November it had issued amendment to implement Full MNP in the country in 6 months from the date of amendment, i.e 3rd May. Today it has made some changes to it and issued a 6th amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulations, 2009.
