Ericsson, T-Mobile ink $3.5 billion 5G agreement

Ericsson and T-Mobile today announced a multi-year, $3.5 billion contract to support T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network deployment. Under the deal, Ericsson will provide T-Mobile with the latest 5G New Radio (NR) hardware and software compliant with 3GPP standards.

BSNL gets Government approval for 4G services, wide roll out expected soon

The Department of Telecommunications today has approved the state-owned BSNL plan to seek airwaves in the 2100 Mhz band to launch 4G services pan-India. BSNL in 2017 has submitted a detailed project report and in a bid to acquire spectrum worth about Rs 13,885 crore, and sought Rs 6,652 crore as equity infusion from the government. Sprint and Nokia to demo First Live 5G NR Connection over Massive MIMO

Nokia and Sprint today announced that they will showcase the first live demonstration of a 5G New Radio (NR) connection over a dual mode-capable Massive MIMO radio at Sprint’s booth during Mobile World Congress Americas. For this, both the companies will use Sprint’s 2.5 GHz spectrum, Nokia’s commercial AirScale Base Station and Massive MIMO Active Antenna, and a VIAVI TM500 5G test device emulator. Verizon completes first 5G NR call on a commercial network with simulated smartphone

Verizon, Ericsson, and Qualcomm Technologies today announced that they have completed the first end-to-end call with a smartphone form factor test device on a commercial 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) network in Minneapolis, MN. WhatsApp finally arrives for KaiOS-powered JioPhone

WhatsApp is finally available for the JioPhone that is powered by KaiOS. At the annual AGM back in July, Reliance Jio chairman said that YouTube, WhatsApp and an improved Facebook app will be available for JioPhone from 15th August. After a month’s delay, WhatsApp is now available. The app has been built specially for Jio KaiOS, a web based operating system designed for JioPhone, so that its users get the best experience.

Vodafone India, Idea Cellular merger complete; Vodafone Idea Limited becomes country’s biggest telecom operator

After signing agreements back in March last year, Vodafone India and Aditya Birla Group’s telecom arm Idea Cellular have announced that the merger has been completed. Idea Cellular has been renamed as ‘Vodafone Idea Limited’ and the service provider has subscriber base of over 408 million (as of June 2018) with 1 RMS in 9 circles, broadband network of 340,000 sites, and widest distribution reach with 1.7 million retail outlets. RCOM completes sale of fiber assets worth Rs. 3000 crore to Reliance Jio

Last week Reliance Communications (RCOM) announced the completion of the sale of its Media Convergence Nodes (MCNs) and related infrastructure assets, worth Rs 2,000 crore, to Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIO). Today the company announced the completion of the sale of its fiber and related infrastructure assets, worth Rs 3,000 crore, to Reliance Jio.

Airtel is offering free Netflix subscription for 3 months to select Postpaid and Home Broadband users

Airtel has expanded its partnership with Netflix in India under which subscribers of select Airtel Postpaid and V-Fiber Home Broadband plans will receive a three-month gift of a Netflix subscription. Post that they can pay the Netflix subscription seamlessly, using their Airtel postpaid or home broadband bill. Existing Netflix subscribers will also be eligible for this gift. Subscribers not eligible for the gift will be able to sign up to Netflix through Airtel’s apps and pay for their subscription using their Airtel bill.
