Samsung, with a mad obsession with large screened devices, a market they themselves help pioneer, launched two huge handsets fit for their name, namely the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, with the respective screen sizes appended to their name. We found them quite huge, unsurprisingly, and we wanted to see how the trend has been with the Samsung’s Galaxy family of Android devices with respect to growing screen sizes. So yes, we took some devices we had with us to the launch event and put them side to side to see how the screen sizes fared against each other. LG Optimus G Pro to roll out in Asia including India in June


We reported last month that the Optimus G Pro would launch in India in June. Now, LG has officially announced that the phone would be released in Asian markets including India in June. The LG Optimus G Pro was unveiled in February and went on sale in Korea on February 21st. The Optimus G Pro (L-04E) went on sale in Japan last month. LG Optimus G Pro sales crossed 500 thousand units in Korea, in less than 40 days of launch. Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S4 mini, successor of the Galaxy S3 mini ahead of the Samsung Premier 2013 scheduled for June 20th in London. It has a 4.3-inch (960 × 540 pixels) qHD Super AMOLED display, powered by a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor and runs on Android 4.2.2. Jelly Bean with Samsung’s own Nature UX. It packs a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash and a 1.9-megapixel HD front-facing camera. It has 1.5GB of RAM and packs a 1900 mAh battery. It comes with 4G LTE, or 3G HSPA+ (GT-I9190) or 3G Dual SIM (GT-I9192) depending on the market. BlackBerry Q10 Launching in India on June 6th in Delhi

BlackBerry showed off the BlackBerry Q10 alongside the first BlackBerry 10 device the Z10 during the BlackBerry 10 launch event back in January this year.  The Q10 is already on sale in the UK where I got my hands on one. Now the 2nd BlackBerry 10 device is making its way to India. The company has sent to invites for a launch event in Delhi on June 6th and is expected to announce the Q10 for the Indian market.

Huawei MediaPad 10 Link that was announced earlier this year is now on pre-order in India from online retailer Flipkart. The tablet has a 10.1-inch HD (1280 x 800 pixels) display, powered by a 1.2 GHz Quad Core Huawei Hi-Silicon Processor with 16 Core GPU and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It has a 3-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) front-facing camera. It has 3G support via SIM card slot,  Dolby Surround Sound and packs a 6600 mAh battery that would offer 6 hours of continuous gaming or 8 hours of continuous video playback. Motorola’s flagship Moto X to be out by October

At the D11 conference, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside, confirmed that the smartphone manufacturer that has been keeping a low profile will be out with a new smartphone dubbed the Moto X later this year. Expected to be out by October, the phone is geared to have exceptional power management.

Woodside claims that this will be achieved by the use of dual processors though he did not clarify whether this meant the use of ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture or a physically distinct low power mode chip. Lava International has launched the E-Tab XTRON+, successor of the E-Tab XTRON that was launched back in February. It has a has a 7-inch (1024 x 600 pixels) capactive multi-touch IPS display and is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor similar to its predecessor, but this runs on Android 4.2.2. (Jelly Bean), has a HDMI port, 2-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) front-facing camera.

Tablet shipments expected to exceed total PC shipments in 2015

IDC, the analysis company that analyses several markets every quarter has released a report that Tablet shipments are all set to overtake total PC shipments in 2015. With a rapidly growing tablet market, IDC notes that the landscape is changing after the flood of low cost Android tablets with screen sizes less than 8 inches, which might contribute as much as 57% of the total tablet market in 2017, while the rest is constituted by bigger tablets, mostly the iPad. The iPad mini too might be a  proven driver in the sales of small tablets.

Spice Stellar Jazz Mi-353, a new entry-level phone in the Stellar series is now available from online retailer Saholic. It has a 3.5-inch (320 x 480 pixels) display, powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It has a dual Philips speakers on the front and has SRS TruMedia supports for enhanced audio output. It comes with a 3-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. It has dual SIM support with dual standby.  Samsung launched the Galaxy Music with dual speakers last year running Android 4.0 ICS. It got the Jelly Bean update recently. Samsung to unveil Galaxy S4 mini on June 20th, detailed specs leak out

Samsung would unveil the Galaxy S4 mini at the Samsung Premier 2013 scheduled for June 20th, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal. This coincides with the rumors that surfaced back in March. The Galaxy S4 mini was confirmed from the official App Store listing recently. Xolo Q1000 goes official, 5 inch HD display, Quad Core processor and Android 4.2 for Rs. 14,999

Initially spotted online, the Xolo Q1000 has finally gone official, with a price tag of Rs. 14,999/- Powered by a Quad Core processor, the Xolo Q1000 has a 5 inch 1280×720 HD display, which seems to the be the benchmark of all the mid range phablet-like devices in the Indian market these days. The display is similar to the one on the Xolo A1000 launched earlier this year, and the 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor and GPU are similar to that of the Xolo Q800. Consistent with other recent Android phone releases from other brands, the Xolo Q1000 is also running on Android 4.2 Jellybean, with lockscreen widgets and notification toggles.

Tata Docomo, one of the many leading operators in India, has partnered with Opera, the browser company, for providing a customized co-branded Opera Mini browser for all of its users in India. Armed with server side data compression technology, which the company pioneered, it provides up to 90% compression and lets you browse with much lesser impact on your mobile data balance. The co-branded browser is available for download at m.opera.com on all the supported mobile devices. That means everything except Windows Phone, we guess.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z launched in India for a price of Rs.46,990

Sony launched its Xperia Tablet Z at the Mobile World Congress and it recently went on pre-order for about Rs.44,990 at several online retailers in India, but now, at a launch event in New Delhi, Sony has finally launched it here, for a price of Rs. 46,990. Boasting a brilliant 10.1 inch 1920×1200 display, the tablet aims to be the big screened point of interaction for all of Sony’s services like Music unlimited and Movies. We had went hands on with the device back in February at the MWC event and were left quite impressed. But with a steep price, will it find its way into people’s hands? Only time will tell.

WeChat now available for Nokia Asha devices

WeChat, the Instant messenger application from the grand orient, has its aim squarely at Whatsapp for ubiquity in platforms. In that direction, it has announced the availability of the IM app for Nokia’s Asha range of devices. The IM app, which works fairly similar to Whatsapp in terms of functionality, is available for download over the Nokia Store.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 now available on Snapdeal for Rs.24,900

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled two new Galaxy devices at a launch event in Chennai. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 and the Galaxy Mega 6.3 are the two new entrants to the new Mega series of devices solely focused on big screened smartphone computing. Out of the two devices launched, which were set to be available in India real soon, we already have the Galaxy Mega 5.8 listed as available on Snapdeal, the online retailer for a price of Rs. 24,900 which is two hundred rupees lesser than the launch price of Rs. 25,100. Although it is currently listed as sold out, we think that the devices are already trickling down into the retail channels and you will be able to get the device sooner than what Samsung said, we feel.
