We had unboxed the Nokia X a while back, right after it launched in India. Only a few weeks back, Espoo’s first bold entry into the low end Android smartphone segment was revealed at MWC. The phone might be running Android, a Google owned entity, but is completely devoid of anything that resembles Google services. Nokia completely forked the open source variant of Android, just like Amazon did, by choosing not to include Google services and apps, which are obviously a conflict of interests for the company. But being open source, the malleable Android is always willing to bend to our will, and soon enough, enterprising developers who got their hands on the Nokia X, devised a way to install Google apps and services onto this neat little device. We followed their path, and made a video, so that willing users can take advantage of it too –

Huawei drops plans for its dual boot Android and Windows Phone devices

Last week, Asus dropped its dual boot tablet – Transformer Duet owing to pressure from Google and Microsoft. It looks like that was just a sign of things to come. Today, Huawei, a Chinese manufacturer has announced that it is dropping its plans to build a Android and Windows Phone smartphone.

Samsung Gear 2 variant with SIM card slot for voice calls reportedly in the works

Samsung is planning to launch a variant of its Gear 2 smartwatch capable of making voice calls without connecting to a smartphone, according to a report from Korean Herald. Samsung plans to release the new version of the Gear 2 in Korea in partnership with the local operator SK Telecom. This would have a built-in SIM card or USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) to use it as a standalone mobile device. Xiaomi has announced Redmi Note, the successor of the Redmi / Red Rice smartphone in China. It was confirmed earlier this week and comes with a 5.5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display based on OGS technology and 178-degree wide viewing angle, powered by a 1.4 GHz / 1.7 GHz Octa-Core MediaTek MT6592 processor with Mali 450 GPU and runs on MIUI v5 based on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). It has a 13-megapixel rear camera with 28mm lens with f/2.2 aperture, LED flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. HTC Desire 516 leaked online

HTC has not yet launched its flagship device of this year, but we know it is just a week away before it launches the all new HTC One. In the meantime, HTC is also preparing a midrange Desire series smartphone. HTC had introduced the Desire 816 at MWC 2014 earlier this year and now plans to unveil the Desire 516.

Sony starts rolling out Android 4.4 update for Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and Z1 Compact

Sony has started rolling out the Android 4.4 (KitKat) update for the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and the Z1 compact. It started rolling out the Android 4.3 update for the Z Ultra and the Z1 back in December last year, and the Z1 Compact was launched running Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). The Sony Xperia Z2 that was unveiled last month runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) out of the box. The KitKat update brings performance tweaks, lot of under the hood improvements, new skin and new features. Oppo unveiled its flagship Oppo Find 7, the successor of the Oppo Find 5, at an event in China few hours back. It has a gorgeous 5.5-inch Quad HD display at a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels and a TOL (Touch On Lens) module. The ultra-sensitive touch lets you use the phone even when it’s wet or when wearing gloves. It has a solid build and a similar design that we had seen on the Oppo Find 5. Karbonn today launched Titanium Octane and Titanium Octane Plus smartphones with MediaTek MT6592 Octa-core chips along with the Titanium Hexa. The Karbonn Titanium Octane has a 5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) display and the Octane Plus has a 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) full HD IPS display. Both these smartphones run on the Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS. The Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus would compete with the recently launched Micromax Canvas Knight A350 that has similar features. Oppo announces Find 7a with 5.5inch Full HD display and Snapdragon 801 SoC

Oppo is holding an event today in China where they announced their latest flagship device – Oppo Find 7 and its slightly trimmed down counterpart – Oppo Find 7a. Oppo Find 7a comes with a 5.5inch Full HD display sporting a pixel density of 403ppi and has most other features similar to the Oppo Find 7 which comes with a 5.5inch Quad HD display sporting a pixel density of 538ppi.

Oppo has finally unveiled the Find 7, the company’s latest flagship smartphone at an event in China. It has a 5.5-inch (2560×1440 pixels) Quad HD 538ppi LTPS display from JDI with Corning gorilla glass protection and Touch-on-Lens technology, powered by a 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC) processor with Adreno 330 GPU and runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) with Color OS 1.2 on top. It has a 13-megapixel camera Sony IMX214 stacked sensor with 6-element lens, f/2.0 aperture and uses software enhancements to capture images at 50-megapixel (8,160 x 6,120 pixels) resolution. The camera is also capable of shooting RAW images and has 4K video recording. It has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture.
