Stephen Elop, the ex-CEO from Nokia, will be heading the expanded devices team at Microsoft, as per reports. Previously rumoured to be in the running for the top job at Microsoft, Stephen Elop now gets to lead the newly formed team, like previously agreed upon. This is pretty obvious now, as Microsoft just announced its newest CEO, Satya Nadella, who takes over the position from Steve Ballmer. Elop stepped down from his role as the CEO of Nokia immediately after the announcement of Nokia-Microsoft acquisition, to avoid a conflict of interests.
Google Maps for iOS and Android updated with faster route notification
Google Maps app for iPhone, iPad and Android already shows you alternate routes when you request for it while navigating. Google has updated these apps to show notifications if there’s a faster route. Google maps already shows bands of red, yellow and green along your route based on traffic conditions. The new notification option now lets you reach the destination faster with dynamic rerouting so that you can avoid heavy traffic in your chosen route. Things haven’t really gone HTC’s way since the rise of droids and HTC is trying to pull back things with their premium offerings. Last year, HTC announced their current flagship – HTC One to the delight of many Android lovers. HTC One defined styled in the Android smartphone market and came with an exceptional build quality and aluminum unibody. But the problem with the HTC One was their new UltraPixel technology which din’t harness the results they would have expected. Samsung partners with Swarovski for a limited edition Galaxy Note 3 Crystal cover
Samsung has partnered with Swarovski, popular for its crystal and fashion jewelry to launch a limited-edition cover encrusted with Swarovski crystals for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Samsung introduced the Galaxy S4 Crystal edition few months back, but they have planned to sell a crystal cover for the Note 3 separately. Recently Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 3 in Rose Gold White, Rose Gold Black and Merlot Red colors, in addition to Jet Black, Classic White and Blush Pink colors. LG Optimus L1 II Tri Android smartphone with Triple SIM support announced
LG launched the Optimus L1 II, an entry-level 3G smartphone with dual SIM support in India back in November last year. The LG Optimus L1 II Tri (E475) with triple SIM support has been listed on official LG Brazil website. It has similar specifications as the dual SIM variant including a 3.0-inch (320 x 240 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, 1 GHz processor and runs on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean). It comes with a 2-megapixel rear camera with VGA video recording. It also has a dedicated SIM switch key as seen on dual SIM L Series II devices. Motorola has partnered with Flipkart to launch the Moto G, the company’s latest budget smartphone in India as it promised earlier this week. It was announced back in November 2013 and packs a 4.5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) edge-to-edge display at 329 ppi with Corning Gorilla Glass protection, powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and run on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), upgradeable to Android 4.4 (KitKat) in a few weeks. Motorola Moto G gets priced in India at Rs. 12,499 for 8GB and Rs. 13,999 for 16GB
Flipkart and Motorola are all set to announce the budget Moto G in India. Just hours before the official announcement, Flipkart has thrown light on the pricing details which was the most expected announcement. Motorola Moto G comes in two variants – 8GB and 16GB and the pricing of 8GB is Rs. 12,499 while the 16GB version costs Rs. 13,999. Motorola Moto G is exclusively available only on Flipkart on launch day and it will be gradually available to other sellers.
ARM reports earnings of $130.4 million in Q4 2013, falls below analyst expectations
ARM Holdings, the British semiconductor company whose processor chip designs power most smartphones reported its earnings for Q4 2013. While the earnings were up 7% year on year, it fellow below analyst estimates owing to slowdown in smartphone sales. The company was estimated to rake in $138 million but reported processor royalties of $130.4m in the fourth quarter of 2013. Android leads with 51.8% US Smartphone market share, Motorola jumps to 3rd place
comScore published its quarterly report for the period of Q4 2013 today and the results show a slight dip in market share for Android. Compared to Q3 2013, Android showed a 0.3 percent dip to reach 51.5 percent market penetration. Trailing Android is Apple with 41.8 percent of the smartphone market being powered by iOS. This was a slight rise from the 40.60% market share it enjoyed in Q3 2013. The launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c are expected to have played a role in this rise. The remaining marketshare was split between with BlackBerry and Microsoft which are at third and fourth spots respectively with 3.4%, 3.1% penetration. Microsoft invests $15mn in Foursquare, enters deal for licensing data
Foursquare, the popular location-based social network, has just received a 15 million dollar investment from Microsoft. This equity investment from the Redmond company comes after a successful $35mn round of VC funding for the New York based Startup in December last year, reports the Wall Street Journal. Along with this fresh investment, Microsoft has also entered into a multi-year deal with Foursquare for licensing its vast location-based data. This will apparently be put to use in its Search Engine Bing, and naturally in Windows Phone too, as an extension. Foursquare has a massive point of interest database that’s heavily crowd sourced with tips, check ins, comments and so forth, hence we think this deal is a biggie for Microsoft.
