It is a ritual. For as far as I can remember, I’ve waited with baited breath and followed every single Apple keynote. Before they had livestreams, there were live blogs. Those who follow me closely, know that I’m extremely critical of the company yet it is undeniable that there is a method to their madness. A seemingly endless ability to create wonder, intrigue and deliver a product that strives for perfection. Widely called the reality distortion field and perhaps rightly so, the magic felt real. Though the half hearted efforts of the last couple of years made many question their faith, we persevered. Yesterdays event though sealed the deal. There was no magic to the small, closed door event where Tim Cook led the show and his partners in crime introduced the new iPhone SE and a smaller iPad Pro. Shattering that distortion field made us see what this was. A hollow bid to lure customers to yet another overpriced piece of hardware. Continue reading “Hey Apple, Where’s the Magic?”

When the Samsung first announced the Galaxy Alpha after the Galaxy S5 debacle, it seemed like the company was trying to head in a new direction. For years, it had been criticised about the build quality and plastic materials of its smartphones. The Galaxy Alpha addressed many of those issues but was over-priced and had a lot of shortcomings. Jump to March 2015 when I reviewed the Samsung Galaxy A7 right after the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge announcement and I could see Samsung’s plans falling into place. The A7 was a fresh new take on what a mid-ranger should be and showcased what Samsung is capable of achieving given the right push. Fast forward to today and now we have the second generation i.e A7 (2016) which builds on the same ideals as the original but promises to refine the smartphone and provide a premium experience in a mid-ranger smartphone like never before.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge were good devices and upgrades to the S5 in many ways. However, one feature that went missing in the pursuit for better build quality is the waterproof abilities of the Galaxy S5. Don’t get me wrong, the customers demanded and Samsung provided with better build quality and premium materials but the waterproof ability was definitely something worth having and fortunately Samsung have brought back the feature with the S7 and S7 Edge.
