Pebble, the company responsible for the uber popular Smartwatch that goes by the same name, recently unveiled its new hardware, the Pebble Steel Smartwatch and along with it came the announcement of the first ever app store for Smartwatches. Yes, Pebble has its own app store now, consisting of a whole lot of Watchfaces and native apps that work standalone, like mini games or work with the phone over Bluetooth and can even access the internet now. One of the many changes that Pebble did with its ecosystem was opening a mature version of its SDK to many developers, making it easier to program for the Smartwatch. We think the app store is a natural progression of that announcement. The store resides inside Pebble’s own smartwatch app in iOS as well as Android, but the latter is only available for developers and is in beta, with consumer availability stated as coming soon.
Fresh off the announcement of Pebble Steel, the smartwatch company also announced its own App Store for its Smartwatches. Called the Pebble App Store, the repository of apps and watch faces with curated lists will reside inside the official Pebble apps for iOS and Android, according to the company. This move has been expected to happen for some time now, especially with the growing popularity of the Smartwatch and the homebrew developer support it gathered in the initial months of launch. If numbers are anything to go by, about 300,000 Pebbles have been sold so far and software bits like apps and watch faces for the Pebble have been already downloaded over 3 million times through third party curated app stores like MyPebbleFaces.com, which is arguably the most popular, for now. That’s definitely going to change with the introduction of the Pebble App Store, and more over, with the introduction of SDK 2.0, developers can now do more with the Pebble and the new App Store will be having that as the base minimum requirement for apps.

Exactly one year back, the Pebble was showcased to the public for the first time. It was truly one of the first “Smart”watches at that point in time but now we are in the middle of a revolution, where suddenly everyone wants to make one before giants like Apple make a splash into the hot wearables market. But Pebble has been playing it cool. With a comfortable lead in mind share, the company started to expand from its Kickstarter roots and then updated its smartwatch’s software with a new SDK, support for iOS 7 notifications and more. Initially introduced as a sporty colourful watch, one of the major complaints from many users(including us) was that it looked like a toy and the build quality was rather cheap.
Well, Pebble has a solution for it this year at CES 2014, in the form of the all new Pebble Steel, their new stainless steel chassis for the same good old innards. It has the same e-ink display, the same battery and the lot but it’s now thinner, has a stainless steel frame and is protected by clear Corning Gorilla Glass. Pebble, the popular E-ink Smartwatch just recently got updated to support all iOS notifications and the new 2.0 SDK. But as an early Christmas present, the company has released another Firmware update(v1.14) for the Smartwatch that enables several new must-have features like Multiple Alarms with Snooze, Do not Disturb mode and improved notification control. We have been using this smartwatch for a while, and we must say, these additions were much needed and we are happy to see a small(but growing) company like Pebble deliver. The company, largely known as a Kickstarter success story, is on a path of refining the software for the Smartwatch, and the recent updates show that they are serious. With SDK 2.0 release, Pebble promised more app integration from the like of Foursquare and Runkeeper. While we are still waiting on that, it’s good to see more features added to it in the meantime.
You can update your Pebble by just connecting it to your phone and opening the app. The app will do the rest.

Qualcomm announced its own smartwatch known as the Toq at its annual developer conference UPLINQ 2013 in San Diego just before IFA 2013 in Berlin and we were lucky enough to meet folks from Qualcomm at IFA including Rob Chandok who is President of Qualcomm Internet Services and SVP of Qualcomm Technologies. We were indeed surprised that we could get our hands on the Toq Smartwatch. This Smartwatch seems pretty interesting compared to other similar products like the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony SmartWatch 2. Qualcomm has been working on the product for over 2 years and this is evident from the build quality and design of the product. Feels very premium and thought out. The best part is the Mirasol display which translates to great battery life and sun light visibility. Watch our hands on video below –
