Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 8.1 at the build conference in San Francisco few hours back. Skype has announced that upcoming update for Windows Phone 8.1 would brings new features. This includes option to switch from a regular voice call to Skype video calls. Microsoft also unveiled Cortana Windows Phone 8.1 assistant to take on Siri and Google Now. Windows Phone 8.1 would be unveiled at the Build conference in San Francisco, California next week. We had already seen Cortana and Action Center in earlier leaks, today a video from Chinese website Coolxap.com has revealed new start screen backgrounds and parallax wallpaper effects in Windows Phone 8.1 when you scroll through the Start Screen. WP 8.1 will have separate settings to customize the Start screen and also options to select backgrounds. Images of Windows Phone 8.1 start screen background leaked earlier this month. Microsoft releases Microsoft Office for Apple iPad – Word , Excel and PowerPoint

At an event in San Francisco today, Microsoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella announced the availability of Microsoft Office for the iPad. The company has released 3 new iPad apps for Word , Excel and PowerPoint . The news is not a big surprise considering this is a much expected move but instant availability on the App Store is a great piece of news of Office users especially those with a Office 365 subscription. The apps are free for download and event viewing office documents is free. But editing the documents requires an active Office 365 subscription. This is clearly Microsoft’s attempt at getting more users to sign up for their cloud based Office offering.

Microsoft Office for iPad – Word , Excel and Powerpoint – Download Links

Microsoft unveiled the much awaited Microsoft Office suite for iPad with 3 separate apps for Word , Excel and Powerpoint. The apps just went live on the US iTunes App Store at 11AM Pacific time and 2PM Eastern time. The apps are free to download and viewing office documents is free. However to edit the documents, an Office 365 subscription is required.

Karbonn, Lava to reportedly launch affordable Windows Phone handsets in few months

Karbonn, Lava and Xolo would launch smartphones running on Windows Phone in coming months, according to a recent report from TOI. Last month at the Mobile World Congress, Microsoft announced nine new Windows Phone partners, that includes Karbonn and Xolo from India. Nokia Refocus app updated to support all Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphones

Nokia has updated its Nokia Refocus app, that now brings support to all Nokia Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone 8. The app was demoed back at the Nokia event in Abu Dhabi, back in October, and the app was launched in the Windows Phone Store in November. It was launched for PureView smartphones, the Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 928 and the Lumia 1020 running the Windows Phone 8 Amber update. Microsoft reportedly makes Windows Phone free for Indian partners

Microsoft would offer Windows Phone free, without any licensing fee for its Indian partners, according to a recent report from the Economic Times. Last month Microsoft announced nine new partners, that includes, Karbonn and Xolo from India. Karbonn recently announced that it would launch dual-boot phones in coming months. Xolo did not announce its plans for Windows Phone devices yet, but it recently unveiled Xolo Win, the company’s first Windows 8 tablet powered by AMD chip. VLC for Windows 8 Beta arrives in Windows Store

After successfully finishing the Kickstarter campaign with a back in December last year, VideoLAN  has released the first beta version of the VLC media player in the Windows Store. It can play all the video and audio files, similar to the desktop version. It currently supports x86 and x64 platforms, but it would soon be available for ARM-based tablets running Windows RT, VideoLAN promised last year. SpiceJet, popular Indian airline, has launched their mobile mobile exclusively on the Windows Phone Store. The app has been available on the Store for over two months, looks like they have planned to officially launch it today. The app lets you  book tickets, check flight status and also avail special promotional offers. Nokia has partnered with SpiceJet to launch the app to Windows Phone Store.

Apple has Siri and Google has Google Now, what does Microsoft have? The new Chatrooms feature lets you Chat with people, share your location, send virtual gifts, and more. The new update also brings improvements and bug fixes. Last month’s update ( version 1.1.6.0) brought improvements to UI, connectivity and file sharing and Persian language support.
