ZTE and Mozilla partner up, plan on selling a Firefox phone in Q1 2013

Mozilla, makers of the once loved Firefox web browser, are trying to become relevant again. Their strategy is to create a mobile operating system that leverages their HTML rendering engine so that developers can write their applications using the same languages they’re used to using when creating websites. In other words, they want “web apps” to get the same sort of respect that “native apps” get. Today ZTE is announcing that they’re going to unveil a phone either by the end of this year or early next year running Mozilla’s OS. David Dai Shu, ZTE’s spokesperson, told Retuers that: “We are trying to increase our efforts in coming up with our own operating system, while introducing products based on Android.” Continue reading “ZTE and Mozilla partner up, plan on selling a Firefox phone in Q1 2013”

Analysts say Stephen Elop has until the end of Q1 2013 to prove he can lead Nokia

Nokia’s current CEO, Stephen Elop, became head of the Finnish handset maker on September 21, 2010. That means that this coming Friday, the day of the iPhone 5 launch in the United States, he’s going to “celebrate” being in charge for two straight years. According to analysts interviewed by Reuters, Elop has until the end of the first quarter to prove that what he’s doing is actually helping the company or sending them straight to the grave. Juha Varis, a Nokia shareholder, says: “The Christmas season is a lost cause. For Nokia, if there is any chance, it will be Spring.” The lost cause he is referring to is of course the recently announced Lumia 920. That device would have been more impressive had Nokia A) Said when it would launch, B) Said how much it’s going to cost, and C) Show off what’s new and interesting about Windows Phone 8. Motorola RAZR i: It’s the RAZR we all know and love, but with Intel inside

Motorola has just unveiled the RAZR i this morning in the UK. It’s essentially the RAZR M that was announced earlier this month, but with an Intel chip instead of a Qualcomm chip. What you’re looking at above is a phone with a 4.3 inch qHD display, what we assume to be 1 GB of RAM, an Intel Atom with hyper-threading enabled that should be capable of delivering up to 2 GHz of performance, an 8 megapixel camera that’s supposedly very fast, and it runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’ll get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but we don’t exactly know when that’s going to happen. Continue reading “Motorola RAZR i: It’s the RAZR we all know and love, but with Intel inside”

Apple’s iPhone 5 allegedly costs $35 more to make than the iPhone 4S

Apple’s newest iPhone, the iPhone 5, is going to go on sale this Friday in America and in several major European and Asian countries. It has numerous new features, but what’s arguably most important is the screen. For the first time since the iPhone launched in 2007, the display is finally bigger than 3.5 inches diagonal. Now yes, 4 inches isn’t that much larger than 3.5 inches, but it’s still significant in today’s market when you consider that Samsung’s flagship device has a 4.8 inch display and Nokia’s upcoming Lumia 920 has a 4.5 inch display. Samsung: Ignore those Galaxy S IV rumors, they’re not true!

Yesterday we wrote up a rumor from The Korea Times that said Samsung was going to announce the Galaxy S IV in February 2013, ship it a month later, and that it’ll feature a 5 inch display. Samsung, not being all too thrilled with the internet talking about the next Galaxy S when the current Galaxy S is barely four months old, went on Twitter to say that the rumors are false. We’re not exactly surprised they’re saying that, but let’s step back for a second and think things through. Continue reading “Samsung: Ignore those Galaxy S IV rumors, they’re not true!”
