Airtel increases stake in Qualcomm’s 4G venture to 51%

Airtel has increased its stake to 51% in the 4G broadband ventures owned by Qualcomm, raising it from 49% that was acquired by the company back in May 2012, according to a report from ET. Qualcomm won BWA Spectrum in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala circles in 2010 by paying about USD 1 billion (Rs. 4912.54 crore approx). Vodafone India offers Rs. 4000 crore to retain 2G licenses in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata

Vodafone has offered to pay Rs. 4000 crore to the government to extend and continue its licenses in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, according to a recent report from PTI. Last month Vodafone announced that that they are taking all required actions, including legal against the Department of Telecom (DoT), regarding the 2G spectrum issue in these 3 metros. Idea introduces new packs with free incoming calls on national roaming

Idea Cellular has launched new roaming packs that would let you enjoy free incoming calls while roaming nationally. Airtel launched national roaming packs yesterday starting at Rs. 5/day. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reduced the limit for national roaming tariff for calls and SMS last month. Videocon made incoming calls free back in March without any processing fee or a special tariff vouchers. Other operators are expected to announce free national roaming plans soon. Airtel launches free incoming national roaming packs, starts at Rs. 5

Airtel has launched new roaming packs for both the prepaid and postpaid customers that would let them enjoy free roaming while travelling across India. Airtel launched a roaming pack for prepaid customers in Delhi back in March that offered discounted rates for incoming calls for roaming, now the new packs would offer free incoming calls. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reduced the limit for national roaming tariff for calls and SMS last month. Videocon already offers free incoming calls without any processing fee or a special tariff vouchers. Other operators are yet to announce free national roaming plans.

Airtel and Google partner to launch Free Zone, offers free access to Search, Gmail and Google+

Bharti Airtel has tied up with Google to launch of Free Zone powered by Google that would let Airtel mobile customers access to Google Search, Gmail and Google+ in India. These don’t work with the Google apps, and you need to use mobile web search and feature-phone-friendly versions of Gmail and Google+ . The first page of a website linked from search results is provided at no data cost. It is also optimized for non-smartphones or feature phones with data access. Airtel has introduced new plans for their 4G customers that now starts at Rs. 450. Airtel introduced 4G TD-LTE services last year, first in Kolkata with plans starting from Rs. 999 with 6GB of free monthly data. Now the new Rs. 450, Rs. Rs. 650 and Rs. 750 plans come with 2GB, 3GB and 4GB of free monthly data, respectively. Airtel has also increased the data limit for the plans starting from Rs. 999 which would come with 10GB of free monthly data limit. Indian Government allocates new spectrum to Vodafone in 14 circles

Indian Government has allocated 2G spectrum to Vodafone in all 14 service areas, according a recent report from PTI. Vodafone had won spectrum in 14 circles including Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, North East, Orissa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh East and West and West Bengal back in November, 2012. Last year Supreme Court of India cancelled 122 2G licenses and the spectrum was freed up later. Last year’s 2G spectrum auction saw poor response which got bids worth just Rs. 9,407.64 crore, much lower than their target revenue of Rs. 40,000 crore. Airtel has slashed the 2G data rates up to 90 percent on select plans for pre-paid customers in Punjab and Haryana, reports The Times of India. This comes after Vodafone’s move to cut 2G data rates up to 80% for the Pay as you Go (PAYG) in Karnataka, UP West and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh circles for both pre-paid and post-paid customers. Opinion – Why 3G Fair Usage Policy is Retarded

Interrupting my usual Internet binging over a daily 2 hour commute, was a message from my operator. The message said I had exhausted my 2 GB limit for high speed internet this month, and now will be forced to a ridiculously low speed of 64 kbps. Say what?! Yes, I understand the concept of a fair usage policy thank you very much, and hey, apparently, I can either go through with the reduced speeds or order an add-on pack for an additional 250 rupees for a GB of 3G data. How lovely!
