BSNL has announced the first ever successful test of their indigenously developed 4G cellular network in Chandigarh. The technology which was designed, developed and made in India was tested with a successful call made between the Department of Telecom secretary and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) in partnership with Skylotech India has launched satellite-based NB-IoT (Narrow Band-Internet of Things) at the ongoing Indian Mobile Congress 2020. “India will now have access to a ubiquitous fabric of connectivity for millions of yet unconnected machines, sensors and industrial IoT devices,” said the company. Bharati Airtel and Reliance Jio recently announced a validity extension for prepaid users and free Rs. 10 talktime due to coronavirus crisis. On similar lines now, BSNL and Vodafone IDEA has also announced special measures to assist customers impacted by coronavirus crisis.
Earlier this month, telecom operators Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio revised prepaid tariffs and later announced unlimited calling to all networks across the country. Post that yesterday, Reliance Jio launched the 2020 Happy New Year offer and now on similar lines, BSNL has announced recharge offers for Rs. 1999 annual plan.
Back in September 2018, BSNL got approval from the Indian Government for 4G services, but the rollout has been gradual. In order to lift the air of uncertainty over both BSNL and MTNL, now, the Government of India has approved BSNL-MTNL merger and has announced the allocation of 4G spectrum alongside clearing relief package.
BSNL has launched the Bharat fiber to the home service where it will offer 35GB data per day at as low as Rs.1.1 per GB and speeds of up to 100Mbps to take on Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. This move comes at a time where Jio is expanding its GigaFiber to over 1400 cities in the country before official roll out. Amazon and BSNL today announced a partnership, under which select BSNL postpaid and broadband customers will get the Amazon Prime Membership for a year free of cost. The Department of Telecommunications today has approved the state-owned BSNL plan to seek airwaves in the 2100 Mhz band to launch 4G services pan-India. BSNL in 2017 has submitted a detailed project report and in a bid to acquire spectrum worth about Rs 13,885 crore, and sought Rs 6,652 crore as equity infusion from the government. BSNL 4G services will be available at five locations – Udumbanchola, Udumbanchola Town, Kallupalam, Chemmannar and Senapathy in Kerala in the high range Idukki district and is expected to be roll out to other districts in Kerala later this year.
