Interrupting my usual Internet binging over a daily 2 hour commute, was a message from my operator. The message said I had exhausted my 2 GB limit for high speed internet this month, and now will be forced to a ridiculously low speed of 64 kbps. Say what?! Yes, I understand the concept of a fair usage policy thank you very much, and hey, apparently, I can either go through with the reduced speeds or order an add-on pack for an additional 250 rupees for a GB of 3G data. How lovely!

Aircel to offer special short-term prepaid SIM Cards for Amarnath yatra pilgrims


Aircel has announced that they will offer  special short-term prepaid Yatra SIM Cards and seamless mobile coverage for the pilgrims of Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir during the yatra. The company would also set-up special counters in Jammu, Pahalgam, Baltal and more locations in  Jammu and Kashmir to make these special SIM cards available to the yatris. Vodafone cuts 2G data rates for Pay As You Go customers up to 80%


Vodafone India has announced that they have reduced the 2G data rates for the Pay as you Go (PAYG) users up to 80%. The charges are down to 2p/10KB from the previous rate of 10p/10KB. This rate would be applicable for all pre-paid and post-paid customers using 2G network on a Pay as you Go basis, which would be affordable for those who use mobile internet in a limited way. Vodafone revised their 3G data plans last June that made additional usage charges after free data and The Pay As You Go (PAYG) rate for the customers customers as 2p/10KB on a 3G network. TRAI: Roaming charges for Calls and SMS to be cheaper from July 1st

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reduced the limit for national roaming tariff for calls and SMS. They have also issued a new regime for the telecom providers to offer unlimited roaming through Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) and Combo Vouchers. This would let Aircel customers download more than 20,000+ videos across more than 12 languages including English, Hindu, Marathi, Gujarati, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and more at Re. 1 per video. There are 8 genres including bollywood, Hollywood, realty, lifestyle, music, comedy and more. Airtel launched a similar Re. 1 mobile video download service last month. Reliance Jio to increase headcount, reveals 4G plans

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of the Reliance Industries has revealed details about the Reliance Jio and 4G launch plans at the 39th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai today. Last year the company first revealed its plans for 4G. Now the company has revealed that they would increase the Reliance Jio Infocomm team by nearly 10,000 professionals nationally over the next year. It started with 700 professionals a year back in Navi Mumbai, now the company has over 3,000 professionals. MTS that operates under Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) has launched the Duet, the company’s latest dual SIM Android smartphone. The phone has a 3.5-inch (320 x 480 pixels) HVGA capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It supports CDMA on SIM card and GSM on the other. The phone comes bundled with voice & data plan. It comes with 3-megapixel rear camera, supports expandable memory up to 32GB and packs a 1200 mAh battery. This would let the Karbonn Titanium S5 buyers enjoy 1GB of 3G or 3G Unlimited Internet Plan free for 3 Months on Vodafone. First time Vodafone 3G customers using Karbonn A12 would get 500 MB  of 3G and 2G Internet Plan free for 2 months.  The company partnered with Airtel earlier this year to offer similar data packs with select smartphones. Tata Docomo, one of the many leading operators in India, has partnered with Opera, the browser company, for providing a customized co-branded Opera Mini browser for all of its users in India. Armed with server side data compression technology, which the company pioneered, it provides up to 90% compression and lets you browse with much lesser impact on your mobile data balance. The co-branded browser is available for download at m.opera.com on all the supported mobile devices. That means everything except Windows Phone, we guess.

The Delhi High Court issued notice against Idea Cellular for allegedly not complying with its earlier orders on 3G roaming. Idea Cellular has issued a statement regarding this saying that they have not added new 3G subscribers have been added in the 3G Seeker Service Areas as per its compliance affidavit dated 18th April 2013 with the order of the the Delhi High Court dated 12th April 2013.
