Skype to acquire Qik for $100 million ?

BusinessInsider is reporting that Skype is planning to acquire  mobile video sharing service Qik for a whopping $100 million.Qik is available on all major mobile platforms including iPhone , Blackberry , Symbian , Android. The company has a great relationship with Handset makers and Carriers.The company announced 5 million users last month.

Download Skype for Symbian Beta

Most of us would have used Skype on the Desktop either for chatting or for Client calls or just talking to your family when you are away.

You can now use it from your Symbian phone without having to logon to your desktop. (Skype via Fring/ Nimbuzz has been around for quite sometime. This is official and supports Skype out calls too)

Skype have announced a beta version of their Symbian application today and it has a lot of features and comes close to the desktop version.

What does Skype buying Gizmo Project mean for Truphone and the next Billion

Skype/GizmoWhat does it mean if Skype buys Gizmo Project? This is a huge deal for the VOIP industry.  It is a big deal for something that keeps going thorough my mind “The next Billion” (meaning the next billion people to get mobile phones and get on the mobile web).  The first thing that came to mind when I heard about this potential acquisition is interoperability with Truphone.

If Skype buys Gizmo Pr0ject this means they would start using the SIP standard as far as I understand.  Using SIP means that Skype would suddenly be interoperable with services like Google Chat (including video and voice chat), Truphone, and many of the other VOIP services. Download Nimbuzz for Nokia 5800

Nimbuzz recently launched a S60V5 edition of their messenger application to support 5800 and the upcoming N97. For the uninitiated people, Nimbuzz is an IM / VoIP application that supports Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AIM, GoogleTalk, Facebook, MySpace, Jabber etc. The appearance and UI of this application looks a lot similar to the the Fring Application but feature wise, this application has more features as compared to Fring. However like Fring, Nimbuzz Application is also completely free to download and use.

You can now make calls over Wi-Fi or GPRS all over the world ! for free if its withing skype or using skype credits if u want to call landlines ! This move is a great news of ipod users who would like to use their ipod as a phone .. well with the ability to make calls – you ipod is nearly a phone !
