11 Digits Phone Numbers to be soon a reality?

With an exponential increase in the Mobile subscribers rate, we might be soon having 11 digits Phone Numbers. Government of India is reportedly now considering to change the numbering scheme from the current 10 digits to 11 digits with an addition of digit “9” to the numbers in order to accomodate more users.

TRAI, the telecom regulator of India, has recorded an increase of 16.67 million during october 2009 itself taking the total number of subscribers to 488 million subscribers. Hence DoT (Department of Telecommunication) has supposedly issued a note to all the telecom operators to start making necessary arrangements for the migration from Jan 1, 2010. DoT Ordered Special Audits for 4 Indian Telecom Companies

The Department of Telecommunications has ordered special financial audits for four major cellcos of India to check the accuracy in reports of these leading telecom companies. The four companies that are under the scanner of DoT are:

  • Bharti Airtel
  • TATA Teleservices Ltd.
  • Vodafone-Essar Ltd.
  • Idea Cellular Ltd.

Indian Government asks Operators to ban Chinese and Korean Handsets without IMEI

The DOT of Department of Telecom has asked all Operators to ban handsets without a legitimate IMEI number on January 6th.

This directive comes as a fight against terror as these handsets are being used by terrorists as they do not have an IMEI number in them.There are as many as 25 million unbranded handsets imported from China and Korea that are believed to be on the knife’s edge.

They have asked operators to block mobiles with fake IMEI numbers like all zeroes .

The Indian Government has postponed the previous deadline for Operators from 6th January 2009 to March 31 2009.

So be careful when purchasing these Chinese or other imported handsets ..

You might even be questioned by the authorities .

Reprieve for BlackBerry users as of now

The issue may be resolved — at least for a year.
