Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem to be used by mobile operators for 5G NR trails in 2018, devices coming in 2019

Qualcomm today announced that Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem is being selected by OEMs as a standard 5G compliant for mobile phones that are expected to launch starting in 2019. The OEMs include Asus, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Connected Technologies Limited, HMD Global, HTC, Inseego/Novatel Wireless, LG, NetComm Wireless, NETGEAR, OPPO, Sharp Corporation, Sierra Wireless, Sony Mobile, Telit, Vivo, Wingtech, WNC, Xiaomi, and ZTE. Nokia and Qualcomm achieve 5G NR Interoperability

Back in September last year, Qualcomm and Nokia announced plans to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials based on the 5G New Radio (NR) Release-15 specifications being developed by 3GPP. Today both the companies have announced that they have successfully completed interoperability testing in the 3.5Ghz and 28Ghz spectrum compliant with the global 3GPP 5G NR Release 15 standard using Nokia AirScale base station and device prototypes from Qualcomm Technologies.

Broadcom yet again bids to acquire Qualcomm at higher price

Broadcom back in November has proposed an offer to acquire Qualcomm, and the chipset maker rejected the offer saying that the proposal dramatically undervalues Qualcomm and comes with significant regulatory uncertainty. However, Broadcom today has yet again proposed an updated offer at a higher $121 billion and the all outstanding shares of Qualcomm for $60.00 per share in cash and $22.00 per share in Broadcom stock. At the Qualcomm, China Tech Day event in Beijing, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO have shown interest in Qualcomm to support the 5G initiative named as “5G Pioneer” in China and introduce 5G New Radio (NR) standard-compliant commercial devices expected as early as 2019. Qualcomm hit with 997 million euro fine by the EU over Apple mobile chip deals

Update: Qualcomm has confirmed it has received a decision from the European Commission (EC) relating to an expired agreement between Qualcomm and Apple Inc., which was in effect from 2011 through 2016, for the pricing of modem chips. Qualcomm said that it strongly disagrees with the decision and will immediately appeal it to the General Court of the European Union. It also said that EC decision does not relate to Qualcomm’s licensing business and has no impact on ongoing operations. Lenovo Miix 630 Hands On

Lenovo has partnered with Qualcomm and Microsoft to launch a Snapdragon powered Always Connected PC – Miix 630 at CES 2018. HP and Asus launched their products in December last year at the Snapdragon Summit. I got my hands on the Miix 630 2-1 detachable and it is a pretty nice effort by Lenovo.

Qualcomm at the CES 2018 introduced Low Power Bluetooth SoC QCC5100 series with support for third-party Voice Assistant Services, Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo, Qualcomm aptX HD audio and Integrated Hybrid ANC for wireless earbuds, hearables and headsets. Qualcomm also said that it reduces power consumption by up to 65% for both voice calls and music streaming, compared to previous single-chip Bluetooth audio solutions. Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 640 specifications surface

Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 630 high-end Mobile Platforms back in May this year, which is being used in most top-end and mid-rage phones. Now specifications of their successors – Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 640 have surfaced in China. According to the rumors, Qualcomm will finally move to 10nm LPP processor technology for its high-end “Snapdragon 600” series with the Snapdragon 670, but it will stick to 14nm LPP tech for the mid-range Snapdragon 640 SoC.
