Earlier this week Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon X24 as the world’s first 7nm LTE modem with up to 2Gbps download speeds as the successor of the Snapdragon X20 that is being used by in the Snapdragon 845 10nm SoC. The company will likely introduce the Snapdragon 855 later this year or early next year. Now hints of SDM855 points to the chip using 7nm process technology.

Last week Broadcom made its final offer to acquire Qualcomm at a value of $121 Billion, which is $82 per share which consist of $60.00 in cash and $22.00 per share in Broadcom stocks. Qualcomm today announced that its Board of Directors unanimously rejected the unsolicited proposal by Broadcom. This comes after the first offer that was made by Broadcom got rejected by Qualcomm back in November and in December it rejected directors nominated by Broadcom to replace the Qualcomm’s existing board of directors. Qualcomm today announced that Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem is being selected by OEMs as a standard 5G compliant for mobile phones that are expected to launch starting in 2019. Back in September last year, Qualcomm and Nokia announced plans to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials based on the 5G New Radio (NR) Release-15 specifications being developed by 3GPP. Today both the companies have announced that they have successfully completed interoperability testing in the 3.5Ghz and 28Ghz spectrum compliant with the global 3GPP 5G NR Release 15 standard using Nokia AirScale base station and device prototypes from Qualcomm Technologies.

Broadcom back in November has proposed an offer to acquire Qualcomm, and the chipset maker rejected the offer saying that the proposal dramatically undervalues Qualcomm and comes with significant regulatory uncertainty. Update: Qualcomm has confirmed it has received a decision from the European Commission (EC) relating to an expired agreement between Qualcomm and Apple Inc., which was in effect from 2011 through 2016, for the pricing of modem chips. Qualcomm said that it strongly disagrees with the decision and will immediately appeal it to the General Court of the European Union. It also said that EC decision does not relate to Qualcomm’s licensing business and has no impact on ongoing operations. Lenovo has partnered with Qualcomm and Microsoft to launch a Snapdragon powered Always Connected PC – Miix 630 at CES 2018. HP and Asus launched their products in December last year at the Snapdragon Summit. I got my hands on the Miix 630 2-1 detachable and it is a pretty nice effort by Lenovo.

Qualcomm at the CES 2018 introduced Low Power Bluetooth SoC QCC5100 series with support for third-party Voice Assistant Services, Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo, Qualcomm aptX HD audio and Integrated Hybrid ANC for wireless earbuds, hearables and headsets. Qualcomm also said that it reduces power consumption by up to 65% for both voice calls and music streaming, compared to previous single-chip Bluetooth audio solutions. Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 630 high-end Mobile Platforms back in May this year, which is being used in most top-end and mid-rage phones. Now specifications of their successors – Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 640 have surfaced in China. According to the rumors, Qualcomm will finally move to 10nm LPP processor technology for its high-end “Snapdragon 600” series with the Snapdragon 670, but it will stick to 14nm LPP tech for the mid-range Snapdragon 640 SoC.
