Apple is usually the aggressor when it comes to suing companies for infringement of patents and technologies, but this time it is the other way round. Apple is the defendant in a case against them for intentionally and willfully infringing patents.

Android runs on 79% of 2013 smartphones, Windows Phone posts fastest growth

android-80-windows-phone-fast-69

It’s the numbers season, with various analysis groups releasing their take on the smartphone market for the whole year of 2013. We saw the IDC report recently that the Smartphone market has crossed the 1 billion threshold. In that lineup, we have Canalys reporting that Android dominated 2013 with almost 80% of that whole Smartphone market in 2013, and amongst them, Windows Phone posted the fastest growth, with a 69% rise YoY between the three major platforms. Both Android’s meteoric rise to the top and Windows Phone’s slow rise from the bottom are pretty much known quantities now, but some of the numbers are interesting. The second biggest platform, Apple’s iOS, has almost stagnated with only 7% growth by losing marketshare, whereas Android is steadily growing at 54%, a good 10% above the market growth percentage. This technically means that Android will reach its maximum in about 2 or 3 years if it and the market retains the growth pattern. Yes, it can happen only at the expense of gobbling up other platform’s shares but it begs this question. Will we we start to see saturation in the Smartphone market soon?

Apple iPhone 5s Review

Apple-iPhone-5s-1

Apple calls the iPhone 5s, the most forward thinking iPhone yet. A departure from when Apple didn’t care to enter the spec wars, it claims to be the best smartphone in the world. Historically speaking, the “S” editions of Apple’s smartphones have changed little on the outside and have opted for substantial changes under the hood. This remains the case here as well. The iPhone 5s brings 64bit support, Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a completely overhauled operating system as well. Does all of this align to make investing in the iPhone worth it? We find out in our review. Continue reading “Apple iPhone 5s Review”

Windows Phone outshipped iPhone in 24 emerging markets, according to Microsoft

Nokia-Lumia-520-2We’ve been hearing how the Nokia Lumia 520 has been the best selling Windows Phone of all time, but if Microsoft’s recent words are to be believed, Windows Phone, as a platform, is now outshipping iPhone in 24 markets. Before you jump to conclusions, the iPhone is not doomed, because it’s the emerging markets where the 3rd ecosystem is cementing its place, most likely behind Android in the first place. This is a decent achievement for the platform, but tells us more about Nokia rather than Windows Phone, because these markets are clearly influenced by their legacy supply chain, and hence the obvious sales. Microsoft recently floated this fact with TechRadar claiming that it is the fastest growing mobile platform right now.

Apple acquires Snappylabs, the maker of burst photo app Snappycam

apple-snappy-labs-acquires-snappycam-iphone

Snappylabs, a one-man company that is known for the burst photography app called Snappycam, has been acquired by Apple, as per confirmation provided to Re/code. Apple’s A7 processor already enables super fast burst photography at 10 frames per second on the iPhone 5s, but from the looks of the acquisition, Apple might want to push for more with their default camera. The Snappycam app, which was recently pulled from the app store, could take up to 30 or even 60 fps high resolution images, which is pretty outstanding for a third party app. The company, which has now been acquired might pave the way for more camera innovation for the iPhone, at least from the software front.

Intel to make 64 bit ARM chips starting next year

Intel Quark SoC

Intel is gearing up to start making 64 bit ARM chips starting next year. Before you jump to conclusions, do know that Intel is planning to fabricate 64 bit ARM chips for its partner Altera, signaling a huge wave of change for the company. It is very well known that Intel is struggling in its mobile business, only recently making strides with the Clovertrail and Baytrail SoCs, and they are all based on the x86 architecture. Intel does not only make its own chips, it does fabrication for other companies too, like Altera for example. The current market leader for ARM fabrication is undoubtedly TSMC, which does fabrication for most companies from Nvidia to Qualcomm. So, in perfect sense, Intel is now a competitor to TSMC rather than Qualcomm or Nvidia.
