Apple has withdrawn iPhone 4s and 5c smartphones from India, as per a report from the Economic Times. The move comes from the company as it bows out of the sub Rs. 20,000 smartphone segment in the country to bolster its falling average selling price (ASP).
The tradition continues, with Apple announcing price cuts for the older iPhones that precede the brand new ones that launched today. The 5c, when it launched, had an unlocked price of 549$, while the 4S at the same time had its price cut to 450$. Now it’s the iPhone 5c’s turn, with it getting the same price cut to 450$ for the unlocked 8 GB version. Long rumoured to be a cheaper version of the iPhone, the 5c launched to poor reception last year. Apple was constantly pushing 5c through incessant marketing in several markets, especially in the past few months. This price cut will hence be the last stretch of shelf time for the iPhone 5c.
Apple took the road not taken by introducing two new iPhones in late 2013 when it announced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Both the phones were quite different as iPhone 5s came with brand new specifications, a fingerprint scanner and a dual tone flash while the iPhone 5c was just the iPhone 5 in a brand new plastic casing. Word in the tech industry was that the “c” in iPhone 5c stood for cheap, but it actually stood for colors.
Earlier this year, when Apple launched their latest and greatest iPhone – iPhone 5s, they also introduced a more colorful, but less powerful iPhone 5c. After a lot of talk with the Chinese telecom players, Apple introduced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in China right from the launch date. However, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c have not been available at China Telecom which is the world’s largest mobile network. Apple and China Telecom have announced that the new iPhones – iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are coming to China Telecom on January 17, 2014.
While the Apple iPhone 5s and 5c will launch in India tomorrow, we’re also about to see something unprecedented. Reliance Communications is all set to launch the iPhone 5c and 5s in India on contract pricing. The package will include unlimited voice calls, SMS and 3G data for a fixed monthly sum. The pricing will vary from between Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 2,800 per month and the contract duration will be 24 months.
