Ari Partinen, the man instrumental behind some of the most iconic camera centric devices to come out of Nokia just announced his departure from the company. Not one to leave much to doubt, he also confirmed that his next destination will be Cupertino, California. Senior Lumia engineer, Ari has worked on game changing devices like the Nokia N8, PureView 808 and the Lumia 1020. Partinen’s experience stretches from camera module production all the way to tuning final image quality and has worked on tuning at the ISP level for some of Nokia’s biggest projects. Nike dismisses reports about shutting down FuelBand

Nike has denied reports about its plan to shut down wearable division of FuelBand. The company behind the popular fitness tracker device has stated in a report to Re/Code that it will continue the support and deal in the FuelBand wearable without any interruption.

Worldwide smartphone sales hit 267 million in Q1 2014: Trend Force

Emerging markets and China have resulted in an uptake in global smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2014, according to a latest report from Trend Force. The market research firm says that smartphone shipment worldwide hit 266.9 million units and improved by 1.13% in the first quarter of 2014.

Apple reportedly teams up with Shazam to integrate song identification into iOS

Apple has partnered Shazam to work on a song identification tool for iOS 8, according to reports from Bloomberg. The feature will allow users to identify a song using their iPhone or iPad’s microphone. The report states that users will be able to access the song identification feature via Apple’s digital voice assistant, Siri. Hence, Siri will answer once a user asks “What song is playing” as it will generate the data from Shazam which has more than 90 million users.

Apple to reveal the future of iOS at WWDC’14 on June 2nd

Following the yearly tradition, Apple has announced the dates for its Worldwide developer conference, the WWDC 2014, starting on the 2nd of June. The event, where Apple’s software products take center stage, mainly for their new features and updates,  will be touching upon the future of iOS and OS X, the company’s operating systems for its two different kinds of devices. Two months after Microsoft’s own developer conference, it will be Apple’s to tell the story of how its platforms have evolved.

Apple rumored to be considering iTunes Store for Android

According to rumors, Apple is said to be considering launching its iTunes Store on the Android platform. This is not something that you would usually see from Apple, but according to Billboard, this move comes because they have no other choice. The sales of iTunes’ digital content is declining and Apple believes that if it releases an Android app, people will come and save its declining service.

Gartner Report : Worldwide Tablet sales up by 68% and Android continues to dominate

According to Gartner, the year 2013 was a pretty good year for tablets – a total of 195.4 million units were shipped during the year. The almost 200 million units is a 68% increase over the number of tablets shipped during 2012. The report also says that the sales of tablets was boosted by the low end smaller tablets and hence Android continues to dominate the tablet market. You can check out the numbers below.

Huawei calls Apple the “Fruit” and Samsung “Some song” in its bizarre MWC14 teaser

Huawei is gearing up to introduce a range of new products at the Mobile World Congress event this year, but before doing so, the Chinese company has readied a bizarre teaser to explain the kind of products it is launching. First off, why the video is bizarre is because it uses an “Apple” iPhone with a Siri-like voice assistant, to mock “Apple” and Samsung, calling them the “Fruit” and “Some song” respectively. Nevertheless, it gives us a taste of what we can expect from the company, when it reveals its products at this year’s biggest mobile event, the Mobile World Congress. Here’s the video –

Apple and Samsung reportedly fail to reach an agreement in mediation talks

In unsurprising news of this week, a lot of Korean websites and news papers are reporting that top level executives from Samsung and Apple have failed to reach an agreement in their mediation talks. Apple and Samsung have been battling it out in the courts for a long while now, and that’s not a secret. Apple had accused Samsung of various IP infringements including the hotly debated “Trade Dress”, but the Judge had decided to give both the companies the option to resolve their tussle through mediation talks. If the reports are true, those talks just failed and both the companies with be back to the courts, with Samsung defending Apple’s claims again.

TSMC switching to 8 inch processing for TouchID sensors

TSMC or the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is responsible for manufacturing Touch ID sensors for the Apple iPhone. Apple had previously contracted TSMC to produce fingerprint sensors at their 12 inch processing facility using a 65nm process. Due to risks associated with the 12 inch Wafer Level Packaging (WLP) process, the production yield has so far been limited to between 70-80%. GT Advanced ramps up production capacity for Sapphire Crystal iPhone displays

GT Advanced, manufacturer of sapphire crystal components for Apple is ramping up production. According to SEC Filings, the company entered a partnership with Apple last year which came with an exclusivity clause for “Consumer Electronics Products”. The company currently manufactures sapphire crystal components like Apple Touch ID fingerprint readers and caps for camera sensors. Android leads with 51.8% US Smartphone market share, Motorola jumps to 3rd place

comScore published its quarterly report for the period of Q4 2013 today and the results show a slight dip in market share for Android. Compared to Q3 2013, Android showed a 0.3 percent dip to reach 51.5 percent market penetration. Trailing Android is Apple with 41.8 percent of the smartphone market being powered by iOS. This was a slight rise from the 40.60% market share it enjoyed in Q3 2013. The launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c are expected to have played a role in this rise. The remaining marketshare was split between with BlackBerry and Microsoft which are at third and fourth spots respectively with 3.4%, 3.1% penetration.
