My friend, Ranesh Kumar considered picking up a new Nokia handset before he heard about the new Motorola Droid. Just last week, he bought two Motorola Droids from Verizon, one for himself and one for his fiancée.
Ranesh was a Nokia fan for a long time and had owned few Nokia’s including an E70. But he made the transition to Verizon for a decent deal on a Voyager two years ago (because he likes qwerty keyboards and that was the only one he liked at the time). Ranesh couldn’t wait for a decent Nokia device to hit the market he liked, so he took the plunge. When he tested out the N97, he was terribly disappointed with the overall OS and decided to hold out for the Christmas season of this year to see what was around the corner and settled on the Motorola Droid running the Android 2.0 OS. There are so many mobile platforms out there – Symbian , Android, iPhone , Blackberry , Windows Mobile , Palm , Maemo and now Bada. The handset market which was once dominated by Symbian and WinMo now has fierce competition from iPhone and Blackberry. Android is growing fast too. Maemo was was never destined to be used in a phone until the Nokia N900. Palm was almost out of the radar until the Palm Pre which came with the WebOS platform. But which is the best ? I recently had an interesting discussion with Henri Moissinac of Facebook Mobile about their Mobile Strategy , their growth in the mobile space and their plans for one of the largest markets in the World – India.
Nokia is the largest handset manufacturer in the world and Facebook is currently the largest social networking site. The partnership between Facebook and Nokia started with Nokia’s popular devices Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 and the partnership has been quite fruitful till now, with applications and home screen widgets released for Nokia 5800 and N97. That being said, the future possibilities seem endless and quite promising with the recent announcement of the Lifecasting application at Nokia World which ushers in a lot of excitement for the users.
The Facebook app on the iPhone platform is by far one of the most downloaded applications on the Apple App Store and the recent 3.0 version of the app is quite simply one of the best applications developed ever on the iPhone platform. The folks over at Android Community have managed to get their hands on the HTC Hero Android Phone which features the HTC Sense Technology . It’s also the first android phone to support Adobe Flash out of the box ! The Hero is runs the cupcake 1.5 version of the Android OS but it’s got a customized UI.
