Nokia sends out invite for MWC 2014

Nokia is all ready to be acquired by Microsoft and it has probably held its final independent event at Abu Dhabi during late 2013. The CES 2014  was over a couple of weeks ago and there was no presence of the Finnish company. Nokia usually waits for the MWC to make itself known and it has sent out invites for this year’s event confirming that it will be there to take wrap of a few devices.

Samsung reports profit of $7.73 billion in Q4 2013 with 9% decrease in mobile revenue

Samsung just reported its Q4 earnings for 2013, in which the company has managed to make operating profit of 8.31 trillion won ($7.73 billion) for the quarter ended December 31st.  It has reported net profit of 7.30 trillion won (~US$$6.8 billion) and revenues of 59.28 trillion won, up from 59.08 trillion won in the third quarter. Mobile phone sales accounted for 32.17 trillion won, which is 9-percent down compared to the previous quarter. Operating profits in the mobile sector were 5.47 trillion won, down by 18% compared to Q3 2013. Qualcomm acquires a big patent portfolio from HP

In a recent move by Qualcomm to gain advantage in the smartphone market, it acquired patents of Palm Inc and iPaq smartphone among the other patents from HP. The total number of patents involved in the acquisition include 1,400 granted patents and pending patent applications from the United States and about 1,000 granted patents and pending patent applications from other countries that include China, England, Germany, Japan and South Korea. However, there was no word on the price that Qualcomm gave for the patents.

Nokia Lumia 525 Review

When the Nokia Lumia 520 was launched at the Mobile World Congress event last year, not many knew that the company just introduced its first best seller in the Lumia series. It went on to become the most popular Windows Phone ever made, for the fantastic value it offered for the money. But there was one longstanding issue that Nokia had to fix, the small amount of RAM that denied a lot of people new games and apps that were trickling down to Windows Phone.

So, in the series of upgrades that Nokia delivered to existing hardware with small changes, aka adding a 5 to the model number and re-releasing it, we now have the Lumia 525 that fixes the one issue that most wanted fixed. Hence the Lumia 525 comes with 1 GB of RAM and a minor look and feel refresh but overall retains everything else about the Lumia 520 because may be Nokia thought “why fix something that isn’t broke?”. Samsung Galaxy S III Neo+ (GT-I9300I) that got certified in Tenna and FCC last month has gone official in China through Samsung website listing. It has dual SIM support with dual standby and runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) out of the box. Other features are similar to the Galaxy S3 including a 4.8-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD Super AMOLED display, 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. Nokia’s Q4 2013 financial results disappoint, intense competition at the lower end to be blamed

The transition of Nokia’s Device and Services division over to Microsoft is about to be completed and the Finnish company has revealed its financial results for Q4 2013. While there has been an operating profit of Eur 408 million, this was mainly because of its NSN equipment business. Interestingly, the company declined to share numbers for sales of Windows Phone running devices however it did mention that there has been a decline over the previous quarter.

Nokia has blamed intense competition at the lower end of the spectrum for the drop in sales of both smart devices and mobile phones. Increasingly, it looks like the decision to hand over device operations to Microsoft was a good one from a financial perspective. Nokia Normandy aka Nokia A110 reportedly leaked via Indonesian FCC documents

One thing Nokia has found it tough, is to keep the Nokia Normandy under covers. There have been numerous leaks about the device and there were also rumors that the device was shelved, but it turns out that the latest development suggests that Nokia will indeed be launching the Normandy. Nokia Normandy had been identified as Nokia A110 running on Android 4.4 KitKat by GSMArena, now it has leaked at Indonesian FCC.

Micromax has announced that they have started their operations in Russia by launching new Canvas and Bolt smartphones in the country. The company would be operating through a partnership with VVP Group, one of the leading distributors in Russia. It would launch 14 products in the Russian market in the initial phase. Sharp has unveiled Aquos mini SHL24, the company’s latest smartphone in the Aquos series for Japanese operator KDDI. The smartphone has a 4.5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) full HD IGZO screen at a pixel density of 487 ppi. It is powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and runs on Android 4.2. It has a 13.1-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, BSI sensor and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera with BSI sensor. It also has IPX5/IPX7 ratings for water resistance.
