Sony starts rolling out Android 4.4 update for Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z

Sony has started rolling out Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) update for last year’s Xperia Z lineup that includes, Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and the Xperia Tablet Z as it promised. Lenovo reports record $817 million annual profit, 50 million smartphone shipments

Lenovo has reported its Q4 FY14 financial results and the full 2013/14 year that ended March 31, 2014. It has reported revenue of US$9.4 billion for Q4 FY14, up 19-percent year-over-year and the full-year revenue of US$38.7 billion, up 14-percent year-over-year.  Its profit stands at $817 million, up 29% YTY. This is the all time high revenue for Lenovo in an year. It shipped a total of 115 million devices in the year that includes, 55 million PCs, 9.2 million tablets and 50 million smartphones. Dropbox acquires 3D photo-stitching app Bubbli

With an aim to enhance its photo offerings further, Dropbox has acquired Bubbli for an undisclosed sum. It is a 3D photo startup that enables users to create 360-degree photo “bubbles,” with sound. In other words the app incorporates 3D technology into 2D photos.

HP 7 Plus tablet with 7-inch display launched in the US for $100

Back in December last year HP launched three tablets in the US, including the HP Slate7 Plus at a price tag of $149.99. Now the company has launched HP 7 Plus, a WiFi-only tablet in the US at even cheaper price tag of just $99.99 (Rs. 5875 approx.). It has a 7-inch  (1024 × 600 pixels) multi touch LED-backlit IPS display, powered by a 1 GHz quad-core Cortex A7 processor and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). Microsoft’s Surface mini was killed off at the last minute, says report

Microsoft’s plans for introducing a smaller version of the Surface were killed off at the last minute, according to a report from Bloomberg. Initial reports claimed that Microsoft was all set to introduce a 8 inch Surface tablet, tailored for note taking. It was definitely in a bid to compete against all the other small tablets, but Satya Nadella, the Chief Executive Officer at Microsoft, and Stephen Elop, heading the Devices and Services group, had apparently decided to kill the “almost-ready” tablet since it purportedly didn’t prove to be different enough to be a hit, in their eyes. That’s obviously a bold position, considering the product was reportedly in the works already.

Qualcomm Vuforia gets Smart Terrain vision, demoed in new mobile app

Qualcomm introduced its Vuforia Augmented reality technology few years back and demoed some applications based on it. The Qualcomm Vuforia would get a new Smart Terrain feature with Vuforia 3.0 SDK, a 3D reconstruction capability. Google Chrome 35 for Android brings multi window, full screen for videos and more

Google has updated Chrome for Android with a bunch of features and UI improvements. For starters, Chrome now supports multi-window devices including the support for folders within the Chrome OS Launcher. This will enable users to organize their apps properly. The version 35.0.1916.122 includes the ability to undo a tab close.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active surfaces in leaked images and video

We know that Samsung is working on a Active version of the Galaxy S5. Earlier this month photos of Samsung Galaxy S5 Active  and specifications were leaked via FCC documents. Soon, rumors about the Samsung Galaxy Prime started floating around. A most recent video leak shows a Galaxy S5 handset with an all-aluminum back panel-a design feature. Its boasts of a similar design to the S4 Active that was launched in December last year. The Galaxy S5 Active shown in the video carries the model number SM-G870A and is an AT&T model. Galaxy S5 is dust and water resistant phone, so it will be interesting to see what kind of features will the Galaxy S5 Active have.

Google+ for Android gets a major overhaul with auto awesome stories and more

Google has given Google+ on Android a massive makeover with a revamped user interface and several new features. The tech giant has introduced a new feature that organizes and manages your vacation photos.

Google Plus 4.4 for Android

Dubbed as Auto Awesome Stories, the feature combines photos and videos and transforms them into a photo album. It automatically pulls data from geo-tags on photos, landmark detection, location history, and other photo analysis tricks to make various slides for Stories.  In addition, Auto Awesome Movies which is available on iOS and web allows you to automatically mix together photos and videos to make quick and fun highlights.
