Pebble Time Steel Review: Balancing Form and Function

Pebble Time Steel -00

Way back in 2013, Pebble launched its first smartwatch. Ahead of the upcoming flood of wearables in all forms and shapes, Pebble was ahead of the curve. Of course, that didn’t necessarily mean that it had a cutting edge product on hand. As Android Wear and the Apple Watch gained mass popularity, Pebble stood watching silently. With over 1 million units sold, Pebble revealed its next generation wearable last year. The Pebble Time takes everything good about the original and kicks it up a notch. CREO Mark 1 Review

CREO Mark 1 -9

The fiercely competitive smartphone market of India has attracted its fair share of players. It’s not just the global technology giants or the enterprising Chinese upstarts, increasingly we have seen our very own indigenous start-ups work towards making their presence felt. One of these is Creo, a company that was erstwhile famous as the makers of the Teewe streaming stick. Launched a couple of weeks back, the Creo Mark 1 is the Bangalore based start-up’s first smartphone. The USP? Monthly updates that bring a whole host of fresh new features. Does the phone deliver on that? More importantly, is the base smartphone good enough to be worth considering on its own? Read on our review to find out. Continue reading “CREO Mark 1 Review”

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) Hands On

Samsung J7 -7

As part of the Galaxy J series of phones, Samsung introduced two new devices at an event in Delhi. While the Samsung Galaxy J5 marks the lower end of the spectrum, the Galaxy J7 is the larger of the two. Like the J5, the J7 too focusses on premium build quality and design. In turn, the internal specifications aren’t particularly cutting edge. We spent some time with the handset and this is what we thought.  Continue reading “Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) Hands On”

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) Hands On

Samsung J5 -2

At an event in New-Delhi, Samsung introduced new devices to the very popular Samsung J series. Of these, the smaller one is the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016). The device combines the high end design that takes cues from the A series with performance that is well, more befitting the price point. We spent some time with the devices and here’s what we thought.

Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: The Affordable Flagship

Xiaomi Mi 5 -5

It’s been a long time coming. Rumors, speculations and just a whole lot of waiting but finally two years after the launch of the rather spectacular Mi 4, the brand new Mi 5 is here with us. All this while, the company has been working on expanding its portfolio both through the Redmi series of handsets that serve as it’s bread and butter as well as a diverse range of connected peripherals. Xiaomi certainly has been busy but that doesn’t mean that it can afford to forget the upper end of the market. Once again with the Mi 5, the company is launching a handset that is flagship grade at least on paper while undercutting the competition in terms of pricing. But does that low price also mean that Xiaomi has had to cut corners? We find that out and more in our review. Continue reading “Xiaomi Mi 5 Review: The Affordable Flagship”

Hey Apple, Where’s the Magic?

steve jobs

It is a ritual. For as far as I can remember, I’ve waited with baited breath and followed every single Apple keynote. Before they had livestreams, there were live blogs. Those who follow me closely, know that I’m extremely critical of the company yet it is undeniable that there is a method to their madness. A seemingly endless ability to create wonder, intrigue and deliver a product that strives for perfection. Widely called the reality distortion field and perhaps rightly so, the magic felt real. Though the half hearted efforts of the last couple of years made many question their faith, we persevered. Yesterdays event though sealed the deal. There was no magic to the small, closed door event where Tim Cook led the show and his partners in crime introduced the new iPhone SE and a smaller iPad Pro. Shattering that distortion field made us see what this was. A hollow bid to lure customers to yet another overpriced piece of hardware.  Continue reading “Hey Apple, Where’s the Magic?”

Honor Holly 2 Plus Review: Big battery, Solid Performance

Holly 2 Plus -13

The Honor brand has stood for well priced, solid hardware ever since its inception. A while back, the company introduced two handsets that made their mark felt in the ever competitive entry level  segment. We brought you the review of the Honor 5X but now here’s the review of the Holly 2 Plus, a device which is priced even more aggressively and is still potentially a very competitive product. With that said, let’s dive straight into the review. Continue reading “Honor Holly 2 Plus Review: Big battery, Solid Performance”

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (Pro) Review

Redmi Note 3 Review -2

Has Xiaomi lost its mojo? Is India no longer as big a priority for the messiah of the affordably priced quality smartphones? We’ve personally had quite a positive outlook towards the upstart but we’d be remiss not to mention that the public sentiment has been ebbing to a degree thanks to the proliferation of competitors from the land of the Red Dragon. Clearly these sentiments weren’t lost on Xiaomi as was evidenced by the rather emotional monologue by Hugo Barra, face of Xiaomi India, at a recent event in Delhi. The man who has rapidly become a bit of an icon in the technology world in India led an emphatic if not a rather circuitous presentation answering these concerns and more by announcing the launch of the Redmi Note 3, more specifically the version that is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset. While the audience cheered, our thoughts veered more towards the handset itself and its role in an ecosystem that is much larger than from two years ago when the Redmi 2 was a trendsetter. We’ve had access to the device for a couple of days now and with the pricing revealed, are now in a position to give a more nuanced opinion on the Redmi Note 3. Read on for our review of Xiaomi’s latest. Continue reading “Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (Pro) Review”

Honor 5X review: Great specs, Even better price

Huawei Honor 5X_fonearena-12

The Honor series of phones need no introduction. Huawei’s online only sub brand, the company as long been known for introducing solid hardware that occupy a position just below the parent company’s premium devices. With China and India as prime target markets, the phones compete with the Xiaomi’s and Meizu’s to offer the best possible at the lowest possible. With the launch of the Huawei 5x, we are once again seeing the trend continue as consumers get access to premium hardware at a fraction of the cost. The proof of course is in the pudding and we tested out the handset to figure out how well it competes. Continue reading “Honor 5X review: Great specs, Even better price”

Not so ‘Mini’ on tech: Driving the Mini Cooper D

Mini Cooper D Unpark -8

A wide grin spread across my face as i felt the car pull ahead and push me back into the body hugging seats. Inside that ‘practical’ guise was a car that lived up to the Mini Cooper tradition and was a supremely fun drive. But hey, we’re a technology website, what the heck are we doing writing about cars? That’s a question i had for the folks over at Mini when they called us over to check out their range of cars. Their answer? There’s more to the Mini than pure driving. We spend a day driving the Mini Cooper D to find out more about the technology that ticks below the surface! Continue reading “Not so ‘Mini’ on tech: Driving the Mini Cooper D”

Coolpad Note 3 Lite Review

Coolpad Note 3 Lite -10

Priced to undercut its stablemate and designed to impress with solid internals, the Coolpad Note 3 Lite is an intriguing device that is poised to surprise and exceed expectations.
