Opera has finally released a beta version of their mobile browser for Android based on WebKit rendering engine. Opera already announced that they would move from Presto engine to WebKit engine that is being used widely, and this is their first release with the WebKit engine (AppleWebKit/537.22 and Chrome/25.0.1364.123) onboard. The new version also brings completely revamped UI, Off-Road mode, Opera Mini compression built-in, Omnibar with combined search and URL field and lots more. Twitter to shut down TweetDeck for Android and iPhone


Twitter has announced that they would shut down TweetDeck mobile apps for Android and iPhone. Twitter stopped development of these apps when it acquired TweetDeck, and concentrated more on the official Twitter apps for Android, iPhone and iPad. Twitter for Android and iPhone got a new UI back in December 2011, and the latest update brought improved Search and Discover features. Google Chrome to bring server side compression for faster browsing?

Opera Mini’s been doing it for a long time, with Amazon Silk and the Nokia S40 Xpress Browser chiming in with similar functionality over the past years, all aimed at reducing the amount of mobile data consumed while browsing on the go. It may seem like a not-so-great idea considering the ubiquity of mobile data today, but the problem is still real, with carriers getting choked on one end, and people unwillingly spending their valuable data on the other end. Like other, Google too is now looking at fixing this using server side optimization of websites using a proxy server. This was spotted by Google Plus user Francois.

Photosynth arrives for Windows Phone 8 with a lens app

Photosynth, the 360 degree(horizontal and vertical) photo stitching panorama app that has been there on Windows Phone for quite a while, has finally received an update for Windows Phone 8, with a nice lens app as an addition. Microsoft has been pushing the Photosynth service for a long time with its nice photo stitching capabilities, that are very similar to what you can find in the Android 4.2 camera’s photo sphere application. The Windows Phone 7 version has been there for the Mango devices and above since May 2012 and it is about time that it has been updated for Windows Phone 8, that too with a lens app for the camera.

Google has finally brought books to the Google Play Store in India. This would let the users browser, purchase and read from thousands of Indian eBook titles and millions of international eBooks from several categories on the Google Play Store. You can also read the purchased books on Android, iPhone, iPad and on Desktop. These books are competitively priced, and most of the books are priced similar to the Flipkart Flye eBooks and the Amazon Kindle eBooks Store. Twitter for Windows Phone updated with new design and features

Twitter has finally updated the Twitter app for Windows Phone. The Twitter for Windows Phone v2.0 update brings a new design with Home, Connect, Discover and Me tabs that was released for Twitter for Android and iOS back in December 2011. PVR app for BlackBerry 10 with NFC wallet launched

PVR has launched NFC-enabled PVR app for BlackBerry 10 devices, powered by NEC’s Integrated E-money solution. BlackBerry launched the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone in India yesterday, and this app would let movie goers, tap & pay for movie tickets and refreshments without using paper money across 15 PVR cinemas in cities including Delhi & NCR, Chennai, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Ubuntu Developer Preview for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, 7 and 10 now available

Canonical has finally released the developer preview of Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview for phones and tablets as they promised. All you need is a computer running on Ubuntu OS and any of these Nexus devices, the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 or the Nexus 10. There are images and complete instructions for installation. SwiftKey 4 for Android with SwiftKey Flow released

SwiftKey has released SwifKey 4 as an update for Android that combines the SwiftKey Flow with gliding input. SwiftKey Flow Beta was first introduced back in December, and it got a major update last month. SwiftKey has announced that the app has been test by over 200,000 SwiftKey fans, with more than 2.4 billion characters flowed. In addition to SwiftKey Flow with mixed tap input, the new version also brings better personalization, easier corrections, support for 60 languages and more. Qualcomm releases Snapdragon BatteryGuru app for Android

Xiam Technologies Limited, a division of Qualcomm has released Battery Guru (Beta) application for Android that promises to extend the battery life on the Snapdragon-powered Android devices by optimizing the device functionality. It doesn’t require manual configuration and runs in the background. After the 2 to 4 day introduction period, it learns the user’s behaviors and then notifies that it is ready to extend the battery life. Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update starts rolling out

Samsung has started rolling out Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) update for the International Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) starting from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Germany. Samsung confirmed back in December that the Galaxy Note would get the multi-screen / multi-window feature in the Android 4.1 update. The Samsung Galaxy S2 got the Jelly Bean update last month.
