Nokia 5800 gets a new firmware upgrade, reaches v31.0.008

Good News for all the Nokia 5800 fans! It has just got a new firmware update (v31.0.008) via OTA and as well as via NSU (File size being 6MB and 100MB respectively).

The new firmware update (v31.0.008) brings along with it a lot of known bugfixes and improved sensitivity of the touchscreen. The firmware has been released for several product codes in European countries today and shall be rolling out for others in the coming few days.

To update your firmware via Over The Air method, just type *#0000# from the dialler and then press ‘Options => Check for updates‘. And if you are lucky, the update dialog would pop up, else you will have to wait for few days for the new firmware to get rolled up worldwide.

However, before proceeding with the firmware upgrade, we advise you to backup all your important phone data as usual, even though 5800 has UDP (User Data Preservation).

The Changes in the new firmware v31.0.008 are as follows:

Nokia Maps has been updated to Ovi Maps 3.1
The Ovi Store client has been updated to v1.05(231)
Performance Improvements has been observed which means more free RAM and better memory optimisations.

Nokia N86 to have face detection in future firmware update!

AAS is reporting that Nokia’s camera flagship is to have the face detection feature in its next firmware upgrade. This feature, if it is implemented, will enable the N86, as the name suggests, detect a face and increase focus over it. Face Detection has long been available to samsung devices and now for the first time on a Nokia device. Have a look at the screenshot below for further proof.

AT&T slowly rolling out MMS to its customers. 2 weeks earlier

Good news for our US iPhone readers. AT&T are slowly rolling out MMS for it’s customers. That’s 2 whole weeks ahead of the announced 25th September day. MMS support should be available slowly for all their customers, since at the moment, very few people have reported that their MMS has been activated.

iPhone 3.1 Update might brick your unlocked phone for life Beware !

Apple is getting tougher against unlockers with each firmware update to the iPhone. Yesterday the 3.1 update was released. The iphonedev team which released pwnage tools to unlock even the 3GS is sending out a warning message.

3G+3GS unlockers must still stay far away from official 3.1. There’s no known way to revert from 3.1’s 3G+3GS baseband

This message comes from MuscleNerd who is part of the team which releases the unlocking tools . What this means that there is no way to re-virginize the 3G and 3GS phones once you upgrade to 3.1 .

iPhone OS 3.1 is out

Apple has just announced the release of iPhone OS 3.1 in its Rock And Roll event that happened today.

The new update brings in many important changes like:

Genius Recommendations for Apps = Get recommendations for apps you might like based on apps you’ve already bought/downloaded from the App store.
Genius Mixes = iTunes can now create up to 12 playlists based on what’s already there on your iTunes library. and unlike the Genius feature, you now don’t have to choose a sample song as well.
A Brand New Ringtone Store = Choose from a wide variety of ringtones on the iTunes store with over 30.000 ringtones available for 1.29$ / each ringtone.
Organize Apps in iTunes = You can now use iTunes to drag and drop apps onto your virtual Home screens on your computer, then sync them back onto your iPhone/iPod Touch.

iPhone 3.1 Update also brings in many other changes like:

Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos.
iTunes U content organization.
Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store.
Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store.
Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll.
Option to “Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS.
Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on.

It is available for download right now! So if you have an iPhone/iPod Touch, I would recommend you to upgrade to version 3.1 now.

However if you have a unlocked and jailbroken iPhone, I would recommend you to not update to OS 3.1 right away and hold on for a while until the you hear anything from the iPhone Dev Team.

Interview with Henri Moissinac about Facebook Mobile and India

I recently had an interesting discussion with Henri Moissinac of Facebook Mobile about their Mobile Strategy , their growth in the mobile space and their plans for one of the largest markets in the World – India.

Nokia is the largest handset manufacturer in the world and Facebook is currently the largest social networking site. The partnership between Facebook and Nokia started with Nokia’s popular devices Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 and the partnership has been quite fruitful till now, with applications and home screen widgets released for Nokia 5800 and N97. That being said, the future possibilities seem endless and quite promising with the recent announcement of the Lifecasting application at Nokia World which ushers in a lot of excitement for the users.

The Facebook app on the iPhone platform is by far one of the most downloaded applications on the Apple App Store and the recent 3.0 version of the app is quite simply one of the best applications developed ever on the iPhone platform. A sneak peek into Spotify’s S60 Client

After iPhone and Android Apps, Spotify is now gearing up for an S60 Client.

For the people who dont know, Spotify is a subscription based music streaming service which allows instant listening to specific tracks or albums with almost zero buffering delay.

To give you a basic idea of what to expect from the application, Spotify has released a video demo of its Client running on S60 which is currently in development and will be out soon.

It is basically an application which lets people publish their status updates, share photos etc directly onto their Facebook account along with their location with the help of Ovi Maps, right from the home screen of their phone.

However, the only devices that currently support Ovi Lifecasting are Nokia N97 and the new Nokia N97 Mini. So if you have a Nokia N97 or N97 Mini, rush now to download this application, since there is a limited entry for the beta testers of this exclusive application.

Nokia Messaging Gets HTML support for Touch Screen Phones

About a month back we had told you that Nokia Messaging team is planning to release HTML Support for all the touchscreen phones and guess what, they have just released an update for Nokia Messaging, which brings HTML support to all the touchscreen phones, like Nokia N97 and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic etc.

Having tried the new Nokia Messaging for a day or two now, I can easily say that this is one of the best version of Nokia Messaging out yet.

A Sneak Peak into Nokia N97’s Firmware 2.0

Here is a a sneak peak into the new Nokia N97 firmware 2.0 (i.e. v20.0.005) that is coming shortly for all the N97 users. The Nokia N97 will finally going to have full kinetic scrolling across the device. Also some of the other new features, N97 Firmware 2.0 is going to possess are New Homescreen Widgets, An Updated Facebook application, Increased Free internal memory, some usability enhancements and also many stability improvements.

The Nokia N97 Firmware 2.0 is going to come out this October via Software Update.

Kinetic scrolling across all the menus and increase in internal space memory was a big addition and also was one of the most requested feature by the N97 Users.
