The 5G smartphone has grown significantly since they first began appearing in the market 2 years ago. In the first quarter of 2021, Apple leads the market with 40.4 billion shipments, and Samsung and Vivo recorded the highest QoQ growth at 79% and 62% respectively.

The global smartphone is expected to reach record shipments in 2021, with the IDC predicting shipment numbers of nearly 1.38 billion units for the year, growing 7.7% when compared to 2020. The market’s growth is predicted to continue growing in 2022 at 3.8% YoY. Driving this growth is the increasing pace of adoption of 5G capable smartphones as 5G networks begin to deploy around the world.

Smartphone vendors shipped nearly 346 million devices during first quarter of 2021, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The strong growth came from all regions with the greatest gains coming from China and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China), said the report. As the pandemic restrictions around the world have largely been lifted, the smartphone market worldwide has begun to recover from the massive 16% YoY decline it saw for the last quarter. According to IDC, the market recorded 353.6 million units shipped, which calculates to a decline of 1.3% YoY. The top 5 companies were Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple and Vivo.

After a sharp decline during Q2 2020, the Indian smartphone market has made a strong recovery in the third quarter of 2020, recording a growth of 8% YoY and shipping about 50 million units according to a report from Canalys. Xiaomi continues to lead the market, followed by Samsung, Vivo, realme and OPPO.


Samsung has begun rolling out their One UI 2.5 update their Galaxy line of smartphones. The update brings many of the features from the Galaxy Note20 series to older Galaxy phones, including improved pro video and audio controls, an updated Samsung Notes app with Audio Bookmarks, Wireless DeX support and more.

In Q2 2020, the Indian smartphone market shipped 18.2 million units, recording a decline of 50.6% YoY, according to a report by IDC. The decline was primarily caused by the COVID-19 and the top 5 smartphone sellers for the quarter were Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, realme and OPPO.

The premium smartphone segment (above Rs. 30000) recorded an overall decline of about 32% YoY in Q2 2020, as the market continued to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. OnePlus took the first place in market share for this quarter, close followed by Samsung second place and Apple in third place.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the smartphone market as IDC has reported that the worldwide smartphone market declined by 16% YoY in Q2 2020. Total shipments were recorded at 278.4 million smartphones and the top 5 manufacturers for the quarter were HUAWEI, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect smartphone sales as a new report from Counterpoint Research states that the premium smartphone segment recorded a decline of 13% YoY globally.
