Recently at an event in Chennai, Lenovo unveiled their new strategy for the Indian market in which they announced their foray into the highly competitive and booming Smartphone market. We were there at the press briefing and they had launched a total of five devices. Naturally, we got a brief hands on with every one of them. We bring some photos and our thoughts about Lenovo’s all new portfolio of devices for India.
First up is the Lenovo K860, this is Lenovo’s flagship phone that has all the top end specs that we crave for.
The Lenovo K860 has a 5-inch (720 x 1280 pixels) IPS display with a wide 178 degree viewing angle. From what we saw, the display is absolutely gorgeous, we would keep it right up there, at the top along with all the other beautiful IPS displays from the One X, the 4x HD and even the Optimus G, but our only small gripe was the blacks, they could have been deeper.
On the inside, it is powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor with Mali 400M GPU. During our short hands on, we found no hint of lag, everything(except the multitasking switcher) was zippy smooth, much like the Galaxy S3 with similar innards.
The connectivity options include, 3G (HSDPA: 21 Mbps, HSUPA: 5.76Mbps), WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, aGPS. It has 1GB LPDDR2 RAM, 8GB eMMC, expandable memory up to 32GB with microSD and a massive 2250 mAh battery. With the memory at just 8GB, it is clear that they had cost reduction in mind, but the inclusion of the micro SD slot is welcome. Here is the unboxing of the Sony Xperia J, a mid-range Android smartphone from Sony that is priced around Rs. 18,000. It is available in India in Black and White colours. Sony announced the Xperia J at IFA 2012 in August and it was launched in India in October. It has a 4.0-inch (854 x 480 pixels) capacitive touch screen and is powered by 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which is upgradable to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The device has good build quality and feels nice in hand. It weighs just 124 grams.

Nokia has retained its top spot in the Most Trusted Brands in the 2012 list, according to the Economic Times Brand Equity survey for 2012. The company held the No: 1 spot for 3 years in a row from 2008 to 2010, but slipped to 5th spot in 2011 survey. In this year’s survey Nokia moved up to the 3rd spot. This survey identifies brands that have won that most special attribute Economic Times has add more markets such as Patna, Indore and Vijayawada hence making the survey more geographically representative. Asus announced few months back that the Nexus 7 would be available in India in November. Asus has now confirmed to us that the Nexus 7 would go sale in India from tomorrow at an MRP of Rs. 19,999. Google announced the Nexus 7, their first Android tablet with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) in June at Google I/O for $199. Google unveiled the 32GB and a 3G variants of the Nexus 7 few weeks back. Asus has launched the VivoTab RT TF600 TG in India. Asus announced the Windows RT tablet at Computex in June, then renamed it from Tablet 600 to Vivo Tab RT later at IFA in August. It has a 10.1-inch (1366×768 pixels) LED Backlight Super IPS+ display with 10 fingers multi-touch display and is powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. It runs on Windows 8 RT OS . Huawei has officially launched the MediaPad 7 Lite, their new 7-inch Android tablet with 3G and voice calling facilities. It was announced earlier this August and went on sale in India online at the end of October. Huawei has also announced that the MediaPad 10 FHD that was announced back in February would be available in India in December. The MediaPad 7 Lite has a 7-inch (1024 x 600 pixels) IPS multi-touch display and is powered by a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor. It has 3G support with voice calling, SMS and MMS. The MediaPad 10 FHD has a 10.1-inch (1920 x 1200 pixels) HD IPS display and is powered by a 1.5 GHz K3 quad-core processor. Both these tablets would run on 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). This new pack offers up to 75% discount on International Roaming services such as Incoming Calls, Outgoing Calls, SMS and Data. This is applicable for Idea postpaid subscribers visiting 37 countries including UAE, USA, Singapore, UK, Thailand, China, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Italy and more. This lets the customers make and receive calls and SMS and use Data at nominal cost using their Idea number. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a new directive to prevent pesky marketing SMS. They restricted mobile users from sending more than 100 SMS / day per SIM starting 27th September 2011, and later increased the SMS limit to 200 last November. Now they have announced that the limit would be reduced to 100 SMS per day per SMS for customers using SMS packs, but a minimum amount of 50 paise per SMS would be charged for SMS beyond that limit. Nokia brought Nokia Store Operator billing on Vodafone and Airtel earlier this year, now the operator billing service is available for the Nokia Music Store on Vodafone. The operator billing is available for the Music Store on the Nokia Asha phones that would let the users renew their subscriptions via their Vodafone pre-paid or post-paid account and continue to download unlimited songs and albums from the Nokia Music Store. Nokia already offers subscription purchase via credit cards and vouchers, with this Nokia Music Store becomes the first independent music store in the country to offer integrated operator billing. Apple iPhone 5 is launching in India today. Aircel has announced their iPhone 5 plans for both the pre-paid and post-paid customers. The pricing for the iPhone 5 in India and the launch date was revealed last week. The iPhone 5 is priced at Rs.45,500 for the 16GB, Rs.52,500 for the 32GB and Rs. 59,500 for the 64GB version.
