Jio launched its feature phone, JioPhone in June 2017 in India. The phone sported a candy bar design, came with support for 4G VoLTE and had support for 22 Indian languages. The successor to the JioPhone i.e., JioPhone 2 with QWERTY keyboard was launched in July 2018. Jio saw great sales of both the smartphones and today, new reports have emerged that Jio becomes the leader in the feature phone market.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries at the company’s 41st annual AGM announced that Reliance Jio has crossed 215 million customers in 22 months of launch, compared to 125 million in July last year. Earlier this year when announcing the financial results, the company said that it had over 186 million customers.

Reliance Jio’s VoLTE feature phone – JioPhone which was launched back in July went on sale in India in August. The JioPhone is powered by KaiOS, and now the production of the JioPhone has been kept on hold, according to a new report. Reliance introduced its first VoLTE feature phone, the JioPhone at its 40th annual general body meeting. The company had announced that the JioPhone is effectively free, but to avoid misuse, Reliance was collecting INR 1500 as a security deposit.
The deal offered the JioPhone user to use his phone for 36 months and be eligible to get a full refund of the security deposit by returning the used JioPhone. Reliance Jio unveiled its JioPhone at the 40th AGM last month, and the company said that pre-booking for the phone will start on August 24th. As promised today the company has announced that the phone will be available for pre-booking through MyJio app and jio.com online as well as Jio retailers and multi-brand device retailers including the Reliance Digital stores network offline at 5:30PM tomorrow.

Reliance Jio is in talks with WhatsApp to create a special version of the popular messaging app for newly launched JioPhone, according to a latest report from Factor Daily. Both the companies are planning to introduce a toned-down version of WhatsApp on the feature phone.
