The year 2014 was touted to be the year of wearables and we did see devices like smartwatch, smart ring, smart contact lens and range of fitness trackers. Another new technology that we saw this year were “Smart Appliances” which reminded us of the popular cartoon Jetsons. Companies like LG and Samsung sell home appliances like washers and refrigerators that can be connected to internet and controlled via smartphone.

Mumbai’s Francesco’s Pizzeria delivers pizzas via drone

It’s a bird, it’s a place, it’s not Superman but a drone. Francesco Pizzeria, a eatery joint in Mumbai tested drone for its food delivery. Drones had come into limelight last year, when Amazon announced that it is testing its Prime Air service for 30 minutes delivery.

Airtel launches 4G LTE services including 4G on mobile in Ludhiana

Airtel has launched 4G services in Ludhiana, Punjab. Airtel launched its 4G LTE services in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula in Punjab and Haryana last March and rolled out voice services on 4G in these three cities earlier this month. In Ludhiana, Airtel customers can access 4G on dongles, Wi-Fi CPEs (Customer Premise Equipment/ routers) and mobile phones. Airtel also offers 4G LTE services in KolkataBengaluru and Pune and 4G on mobile in Bengaluru.

Mobistar tests 200 Mbps 4G LTE-A service in Belgium

Belgian operator Mobistar has announced that they have successfully finished testing its LTE-Advanced or 4G+ network in Mechelen. This uses a combination of 1,800 and 800 MHz 4G frequencies to allow a more efficient use of the spectrum higher speeds and a better coverage inside buildings. Airtel launches 4G on mobile in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula

Bharti Airtel has launched 4G on mobile in three cities, Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula in India. The company launched 4G LTE service on mobile back in February starting from Bengaluru and also set up experience zones in the city to showcase the power of 4G on mobile in partnership with LG and Qualcomm. Videocon Telecom to launch 4G services by December 2014

Videocon Telecommunications plans launch its 4G services using FDD-LTE technology by December 2014, according to a report by ETTelecom. It would initially launch the services in Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. At the 4G World India conference, Videocon Telecom CEO Arvind Bali said to ETTelecom that it plans to launch the services between December to January and would launch it in 10 towns initially.

Reliance Jio, RCom sign intra-city optic fiber sharing agreement for 4G rollout

Under the agreement, Reliance Jio would utilize RCOM’s nationwide intra-city fiber network for its 4G roll out. OmniVision unveils ultra-compact camera sensor for smart devices with eye tracking and biometrics

OmniVision Technologies has launched OV6211, the company’s new ultra-compact, low-power global shutter sensor designed for notebooks, tablets, mobile phones, wearable electronics, gaming devices, security systems and more. It is the first global shutter sensor to capture 400 x 400 (square) resolution video at 120 frames per second (FPS), says the company. OmniVision sensor is already present in several smartphones from companies such as GioneeMotorolaXiaomiMicromax and more. Microsoft Surface 2 with LTE announced, priced at $679 for the 64 GB version

Surface 2 LTE 64 GB priceAfter confirming the presence of a mobile-enabled version in the works when launching the Surface 2, the Redmond giant has finally taken the wraps off Microsoft Surface 2 with LTE 4G on the AT&T network, retailing at a price of 679$ for the 64 GB version. The Surface was Microsoft’s first play as a PC hardware company. The first product, called Surface RT, was largely a flop due to poor usability and performance, and even took a write down in the company’s earnings. Surface 2, the successor, was launched almost an year later, with good reviews and better reception from consumers, but still not as popular as Microsoft would like. Touted as a portable productive machine, the Surface 2 in its initial variants lacked a LTE chip for mobile data, which was apparently a highly requested feature, and hence we are seeing it now, in the form of the slightly modified LTE variant of the Surface 2.

Reliance Jio ties up with Viom Networks to share telecom tower infrastructure

Reliance Jio Infocomm, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has entered into a pan-India tower infrastructure sharing agreement with Viom Networks, a joint venture of Tata Teleservices and SREI Infrastructure to use the latter’s telecom infrastructure with a footprint of over 42,000 telecom towers for their 4G roll out. Viom Networks is India’s largest independent telecommunications infrastructure company.
