Reliance Jio Infocomm, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) had launched 4G services for its employees in December last year. It was expected to roll out 4G services commercially by the end of this year, now ET and The Hindu are reporting that the company could roll out 4G as early as next month and the launch date could be August 15th. Reliance Communications (Rcom) has started rolling out its 4G services in Mumbai, Delhi, Maharasthra and Andhra Pradesh circles for the CDMA customers who had upgraded to 4G, reports ET. Nokia is all set to demonstrate a 5G network running on commercial platforms at 5G World. More than 15.8 million 4G devices were shipped in the first quarter of 2016, according to the CMR’s 1Q CY report of India LTE Devices. Of these, 97.9% were smartphones, 1.5% were DataCards and the remaining 0.6% were tablet PCs. This amounts to 63% of the cellular devices shipped through the quarter.

Until recently you required an invite from a Reliance employee to get a Jio SIM card along with the purchase of a Lyf phone to get a 90 day trial with unlimited data, calls and SMS to the soon to be launched Jio 4G LTE network from Reliance. The company has kept the Jio preview offer exclusive to its own Lyf brand of handsets. Initially, these devices were only sold at Reliance Digital stores across the country but few days back we reported that Lyf handsets are being sold at non-Reliance stores in open market, and it was possible to get the Jio SIM card along with the handset purchase for free and no invite was required. In an interesting development today, the company has started sending out invites to users who had signed up on the Jio website which went live last week.

We have been testing Reliance Jio 4G network though the Jio lyf preview offer for the past few weeks on a Lyf Water 1 device and also the Lyf Flame 1 device. The Jio SIM cards are locked to Lyf devices at this point of time. We even managed to get hold a Jio sim from someone working for Reliance so that we could do some speed tests on the network on high end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, iPhone 6s Plus, Redmi Note 3, Lenovo Vibe X3 and more.. We managed to test the network in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. We managed to test the upcoming VoLTE feature of the network too.

Airtel has launched its 4G LTE services in Sivakasi and Villupuram in Tamilnadu. It was the first operator to launch 4G in Tamilnadu back in June 2015. It was launched in Chidambaram, Sriperumbudur and Karaikudi in the state last month and is already available in Coimbatore, Erode, Hosur, Madurai, Pondicherry, Salem, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Trichy, Vellore, Cuddalore, Ambur, Rajapalayam, Kovilpatti, Periyanaicken-palayam (Tp), Namakkal and Gudiyatham.

Idea Cellular has expanded its 4G LTE services in three more towns in Tamil Nadu that includes major towns of Coimbatore, Pondicherry and in the industrial belt of Gummidipoondi. Vodafone launched 4G services in Mysore and Bengaluru earlier this year, now it has announced that Vodafone SuperNet 4G has been rolled out across Karnataka benefiting over 72 lakh customers. It is based on 1800 MHz spectrum band and is supported by a strong backhaul of 3G network. Vodafone also announced that it has added more than 2000 cell sites across Karnataka to launch its 4G network in Bengaluru and Mysuru.

After launching its 4G LTE services or SuperNet 4G in 5 circles – Kerala, Karnataka, Mumbai, Delhi & NCR and Kolkata, Vodafone has announced that it will launch 4G services in Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal in the second phase of roll out. “The nine circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Karnataka, Kerala, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal, together contribute to just under 70% of Vodafone India’s data revenues,” said the company.
