Apple teams up with T-Mobile in the US and EE in the UK for Wi-Fi calling

T-Mobile will offer Wi-Fi calling on the newly launched iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the US while EE will provide the same in the UK. The popular US and UK carriers will be the first one to partner Apple for this feature that will allow users to make phone calls using a Wi-Fi network.

Smartphone ‘kill switch’ bill passed into a law in California

With an aim to put a curb on growing smartphone thefts, Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed the ‘Kill switch’ bill into a law. Starting July 1st, 2015, the law will require all smartphone makers to install kill switch on the phones that lets users remotely lock them in case they are stolen.

ZTE nubia 5S mini LTE launched in the U.S for $279.99

ZTE nubia 5S mini LTE

ZTE has launched the nubia 5S mini smartphone in the U.S. It is calling the smartphone nubia 5S mini LTE in the country. It was first launched in China back in November last year and packs a 4.7-inch (1280 x 720 pixels)  IGZO display. The U.S variant is  powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), compared to Snapdragon 600 processor in the Chinese variant. Apple and Samsung to end all their patent disputes outside the US

Samsung and Apple announced in a joint statement that they will drop all ongoing patent lawsuits outside the U.S. However, the smartphone rivals have not yet settled the dispute. The two companies have sued each other in a total of eight countries viz, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Netherlands, the UK, France, and Italy, and all these cases are being dropped, without being settled and without any cross-licensing agreements being negotiated.

Verizon launches XLTE, offers twice the 4G LTE bandwidth

Verizon Wireless has launched XLTE, a new LTE service for their customers in select cities that would offer twice the LTE bandwidth. This uses 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum, in addition to the usual 700 MHz spectrum. Verizon promises faster peak data speeds and a minimum of double the bandwidth in high traffic areas with XLTE. Samsung confirms Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for 14 Galaxy devices for US

Samsung has finally announced the list of devices that would receive the Android 4.4 (KitKat) update, but this list is only for the U.S. variants. Samsung started rolling out the KitKat update for the Galaxy Note 3 last month. The Indian Exynos variant of the Note 3 got the KitKat update by the end of January. Samsung introduced the Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2, TabPRO 12.2, TabPRO 10.1 and TabPRO 8.4 tablets with  WQXGA (2560 x 1600) displays and Android 4.4 (Kitkat) at the CES 2014  last month. Samsung launches Educational Galaxy Tab in the US

Samsung goes after Apple’s business again. This time, Samsung follows Apple into the educational domain where the presence of Apple’s iPad seems to have increased. Apple’s iPads have a lot of content in the educational domain and with the ever expanding iTunes Textbooks and iTunes U Course Manager, it justifies the demand of tablets in the educational domain.
