Samsung Gear S WiFi only variant hits Japan

Samsung has launched a WiFi only variant of the Gear S in Japan for ¥38,880 ($330). The WiFi-only version of the Gear S is currently offered by Japanese carrier KDDI au while the and NTT DoCoMo is selling the SIM card slot equipped Gear S.

Samsung Gear S vs Samsung Gear Live Photo Gallery

Samsung announced the Gear S smartwatch in August and it went on sale  in India earlier this month for Rs 27,900. We have already seen the unboxing and the photo gallery of the smartwatch and also went handson with it at IFA Berlin. Now lets compare the smartwatch to Samsung Gear Live that was announced at Google I/O conference in June. It launched in India in July for Rs 15,900.

The Gear S runs on company’s homegrown OS Tizen. It sports a 2 inch (360 x 480 pixels) curved Super AMOLED display and is powered by a 1GHz Dual-Core processor. While the Gear Live runs on Android Wear and has a 1.63 inch touchscreen with a 320×320 resolution and is powered by a 1.2 GHz processor. Both the smartwatches have 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage.

The Gear S has sensors like Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Compass, Ambient Light, UV, Barometer. On the other hand the Gear Live has a heart rate sensor, pedometer, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Compass. Both the devices are IP67 Certified for dust and water resistance. Both the devices have the heart rate sensor and charging pins below the device. The Gear S comes with a built in SIM Card slot while the Gear Live does not have one.

The Gear S measure 23.4 x 57.4 x 11.95 mm and weighs 27g while the Gear Live is 8.9mm thick  and weighs over 60g. Both the devices have 300mAh battery. In terms of connectivity Gear S supports 3G and Bluetooth 4.1 while the Gear Live supports Bluetooth 4.0.

Gear S has a signature home button below the display and the ambient light sensor is present next to it and has a stainless steel body and blue, black and white changing straps. The Gear Live also comes with a stainless steel body and a usual rubbery strap.

Apple releases Watchkit tools for developers

Apple has released Watchkit for developers to create applications for the Apple Watch due out next year. The company has made available documentation and guidelines for developers alongside the new iOS 8.2 SDK.

ASUS ZenWatch lands on the US Google Play Store for $199

ASUS introduced the ZenWatch, the company’s first smartwatch based on Android Wear platform at the IFA back in September. Now the smartwatch is available in the U.S. through Google Play and Best Buy, priced at $199.99 (Rs. 12,350 approx), cheaper than both the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R. Samsung launched its Gear S Smartwatch in India last month for Rs. 28,900. Samsung started taking pre-orders for the Gear S earlier this week. Now the smartwatch with a built-in SIM card slot is available for purchase from the their official eStore for Rs. 27,900, which is Rs. 1,000 cheaper compared to the launch price. The Gear S has a 2-inch (360 x 480 pixels) curved Super AMOLED display, comes with a 1GHz dual-core processor and enables you to independently make and receive calls, without connecting to a device and also offers 3G support. Samsung Gear Live Review

Samsung was one of the first consumer electronics giants to dive head-first into the world of wearables with its own line of Smartwatches, starting with the Gear. The original Gear that initially ran on Android, now runs on Tizen, and Samsung’s already iterated on it a couple of times, with the Gear 2, the Gear Fit, the new Gear S, all variations and experiments on the hot new market.

But then Android Wear happened, with Samsung announced as one of the partners. Rival LG had already announced its first Watch, but Samsung waited until IO to announce their first smartwatch that will work across all Android devices, not just Samsung ones, the Gear Live. The Gear Live, the stripped down Android variant of the Gear 2, joins the other Wear watches, in the effort to appeal to consumers willing to invest in a new category of devices. With Android Wear as the platform of choice, does the hardware push the boundaries, or does it play a safe losing game? Let’s find out.

Samsung Gear S launches in the UK on November 7

Tired of having your smartwatch linked to your phone and waiting for the Samsung Gear S to land in the UK? The wait is almost over as Samsung have announced that the Gear S will be launching in the UK this Friday. Samsung Experience Stores and network partner O2 will both be offering the smartwatch which runs on Samsung’s own proprietary platform and is only compatible with Samsung Galaxy handsets.
